Alternate History Ideas and Discussion

FWIW, I was specifically thinking about having FF appeal to the Hungarian troops that belong to ethnic minority groups.
The Domobrani would back Da Man to Da Last Man, man.

What @sillygoose said - Királyi Honvédség units were led by Magyar Officers - it'd be difficult to subvert the Other Ranks without leaflets or posters.

BTW - in the Day of the Jackal novel the author says that the coup d'etat agaisnt the 5th (or was it still the 4th?) Republic was torpedoed by the enlisted men having radios in the barracks and listening to the speech of the President. Not possible c.1910-15 :)

I understood what you meant and stick by what I said. You can't appeal to that group, especially under command of the Magyar nobles, without making public statements.

Fair point!

Anyway, there really was no easy way for anyone to make territorial gains at A-H's expense in the 1910s in a no-WWI TL, was there? I mean neighboring countries with designs on A-H. A-H would be much more prepared for any separatist uprisings on its peripheries in 1917 (or whenever) than Ukraine was in 2014, right?

I had to look up this novel:

IMHO, French nationalists were WAY too provoked by Algeria's loss. The logical thing to do would have been to say "A lot of Muslims are leaving France! Good for them and good for us!" and of course resettle the pieds-noirs in European France en masse. (I wish that the pieds-noirs could have permanently stayed in Algeria, but the best bet for this would have been to avoid eight years of warfare in Algeria beforehand.)

Off-topic, but which additional meta-nation-states (or at least meta-confederations) could have realistically developed throughout history? In real life, we had:

*Yugoslavia for South Slavs
*Czechoslovakia for Czechs and Slovaks
*The Soviet Union for Eastern Slavs (Tsarist Russia didn't include Galicia and Subcarpathian Ruthenia like the Soviet Union ultimately did)
*The European Union for Europeans
*India for Hindus

‘PC: Sigismund I the Old only had daughters with Bona Sforza’

How will the Polish succession look like with Sigismund I the Old not having any sons at all? Would he go down as Poland’s version of Henry VIII, or would Poland have a new ruling dynasty after his death?

The best chance was Russian backed Serbia and we know how that turned out.

Maybe they can bring in a French royal onto the Polish throne earlier? Henry III of France was previously King of Poland for a bit in real life. But this was slightly after 1548.

Do you mean in 1914 or in 1917?

Well, to be fair, in 1914, Austria-Hungary wouldn't be suffering from a civil war like it very well could in 1917 in a no-World War I TL. But still, once Austria is done crushing Hungary, it presumably shouldn't be too difficult for it to crush any Serb or Romanian or Italian separatists, with German support if necessary, unless the Franco-Russians actually decide to make a casus belli out of this issue.

Had Austria-Hungary survived, how would it have handled both the Nazis and the Bolsheviks/Communists? Could it have been interested in a mega-alliance consisting of itself, Britain, France, and Poland in order to protect Europe from the Naz-Bol threat? Could Italy have also been included in this alliance, or would Mussolini have rejected this idea/proposal?

Funnily enough I discussed this not so long ago on a another board.

This issue will come up in 1527 (or was it 1528?) when Bona has her bear accident and miscarries Albrecht. This also comes after suicide-by-Turk as performed by Louis hence no male Jagiellons anywhere.

IMO Zygmunt is too Catholic to go Prot.

The candidates would be Zygmunt's nephews and grandsons. There are quite a few of them, some Catholic and some who could be persuaded that Cracow is worth Mass.
The most competent of the bunch is Albrecht Hohenzollern of Prussia :)

Yet another route is legitimising this fine fellow:
As we are in 1530 he could be married to a princess or duchess (in OTL more or less around this time his marriage to Anna of Mazovia was considered) and put forward for the throne. Forty years later there were desperate searches for even a bastard girl by Sigismund Augustus - not sure how serious, though.

Which board?

And this guy? :

Anyway, a Prusso-Polish union would certainly be very interesting.

A Hohenzollern Poland would be interesting to see, especially if Ducal Prussia might be subjected to a bit of Polonization as a result of the Hohenzollern dynasty assimilating into Polish culture.

FWIW, the Poles who ended up moving into Prussia in Medieval and early modern times (specifically the Masurians) actually ended up getting thoroughly Prussianized:

So, it's still a question as to who exactly is going to be assimilating whom. Maybe the Prussians are going to be the Normans to the Poles' Anglo-Saxons? ;)

The first two Prussian Hohenzollerns were quite Polonised. It was the Brandenburger branch which took over the Duchy in 1618 (ruled as regents much earlier) that "stayed German".
If Albert becomes king in 1548 then his OTL son - also Albert, born 1553 - would be thoroughly Polonised. But it is very unlikely that Albert's 2nd marriage would be same as OTL, as he'd either be the shoo-in candidate for the Polish throne or already on it when his 1st wife dies.
I do not know enough about Lithuania as to say would he get that throne as well or not.

His eldest child, Anna Sophie, sole survivor from 1st marriage, probably marries a different dude too.

'AHC: An Amish-like Russia post-Soviet collapse'

What I mean is that, after the Soviet Union collapses and breaks up, have Russia evolve in a much Amish direction by becoming a more pacifistic (not completely, of course, but more relative to real life, where 70% of the population support aggression against a neighboring country) and more high-fertility country (like Israel currently is).

Gods that last is an horrendous result for the Poles.

You English turned out OK after the Normans took you over, no? You got a much nicer language, though you also had to deal with Norman oppression for a couple of centuries or so afterwards.

Not really. At the risk of coming off as deranged, Marxist or both, much of the reason why the Anglosphere has severe class tensions and is currently seeing a rise of technocrats is because the Norman-Saxon dichotomy created an institutional hatred for the lower classes in nearly every Anglo government since.
