The actual name of the city is Київ, and this is not disputed. Kiev was the most common Romanized transliteration of this name in Western print, although it is neither the only nor the oldest transliteration, nor did it ever have any official status. Kyiv is the Romanized transliteration following the national rules for geographic transliteration which were signed into law by Ukraine in 1995. Kiev is regarded as the Russian "version" of the transliteration, even though the Soviet Union never bothered actually formalizing it.
