Yeah, I was a bit confused. I do remember Jemele Hill from her ESPN days and wondered why they put up with her for as long as they did when the Chinese restaurant I often got lunch at back then had absolutely zero tolerance for racism and could somehow make sense of me trying to place my lunch order in what was a butchered attempt at pronouncing hanzi that looked very much like kanji with a Midwestern American accent.

Manning was pardoned. You probably wouldn't be pardoned for breaching the UCMJ and I'm so highly allergic to handcuffs that I've never been cited for anything worse than a traffic violaton. Manning's case went public and the pardon was probably a "fine, just please stop bothering me about this" meant to make it mostly go away.

Clearance is mostly a matter of "can you keep your mouth shut". If you can't, you aren't granted access. If it's thought you can you might be granted access if you need to know.
Straight, gay, trans, or whatever really doesn't enter into it. "Are you trustworthy?" is what matters.
It is more then that.
Yep; of course the problem with that is the agencies who require said tests are often not trustworthy either.

No, there is not more than that. If you aren't considered trustworthy you aren't granted clearance and there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
You have clearance to look at secret things I'll never be allowed to look at and there are civillian things I can look at that you'd never be allowed to be in the same room with.
