How about instead of burying the trees, we cut them down, treat the wood with chemicals that will prevent it from decaying for at least several decades, and then build various useful things from tools, furniture and decoration up to boats and buildings out of them, and then bury these only once they are used up and broken, becoming trash? Win-win!

If one actually cared about the environment:
Require the top companies that contribute to pollution to label that they contribute to pollution, just like cigarette companies have to warn about cancer.
For example, Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Nestle are the top causes of plastic pollution globally. Require Coca Cola to include on all products "This company is the #1 cause of plastic pollution globally."
Do that for all 99 top polluters.
Discourage people from mindless commercialism.
Make right to repair an actual, constitutional right. Yes, I think its that important. What modern companies are trying to do is use the patents created by monopolies/oligopolies (both in the sense of monopolies created by high barrier to entry and in the sense of monopolies created via patent on a product) to financial bully smaller organizations and individuals.
The right to repair is fundamental to any sane conceptualization of ownership, and the right to repair is also incredibly good for the environment.

On my part, many functionally impossible to recycle with current technology components that demanded a very long series of very long distance trade to create in the first place being reduced to waste. Frequently, E-waste gets chucked at African shitholes with zero environmental regulations to be picked clean for the few pieces of viable salvage, leaving toxic heavy metals to leech into the groundwater from all the parts that aren't. Also Apple's "walled garden" bullshit for capturing the market with untransferable data.
