Important Going Forward

OK, in terms of access to the Politics usergroup, I am going to probably amnesty any prior infractions for existing users who are otherwise in good standing (IE not banned) and implement the 'no infractions' policy for new members only.

Note that I am considering some other policy changes and will announce them after they've been fully discussed with staff. When I do so, there will generally be a period of discussion with the userbase before they are implemented.

For reviewing existing bans, that is something that I will consider once I have things on a firmer basis.

For new staff applications, those will open up in a few days.
When you say that you will consider reviewing existing bans, do you mean forum bans or site bans?

When I took over the site I agreed to not make any changes until the transition completed in February. Reviewing existing bans was part of this agreement. That events outside our control forced this schedule to move forward was not part of the plan, and thus things are far more chaotic than I would desire.

What caused the need move the schedule forward?

You confuse me. Do you mean to say you are still bound by the agreement? or that since the schedule has been moved you are allowed to but can't do so due to the chaos at present among other distractions?

That being said, Sunhawk do you have any plans to eventually do a formal review of some of the past bans and redefine/review the terms of the TOS. (Not asking for an concrete answer here, merely if you have plans eventually look into these issues within the next month or two.)

Blanket amnesty to all users perm banned in the last four months might do a solid to jolt activity. Seems like you guys lost your most colorful and polemic and attention drawing users. Just a thought
I agree with this, I strongly support a blanket amnesty as well. Not only on principle but also because we have lost a number of interesting posters.

Like, the conduct of some of the mods towards the banned users as a lurker made me think the staff should have been purged and the users they hated modded in their place. And the cullings that took place in response during the election? the smugposting by Government employees all "hurr durr we banned ur gaiz deal wit it" was completely disgusting. I don't think anything regarding users being removed since like November should be considered legitimate. Maybe earlier? That'd be up to you guys to pursue. But like, the site had some straight up scumbag staffers and two or three of them didn't ragequit with the old boss so there decisions should be reversed. Interesting posters are the lifesblood of any forum, boring overserious clown people aren't.

In my experience, all too many of the "interesting" posters on any given forum earn that title for being really funny to watch when they're tearing into someone. Which is great, unless you're the someone, or until the rest of the forum decides to start copying the posting habits of the local dunk machine. Neither one is good for any kind of productive discussion.

Really? That's how some of the largest and most robust forums are though. If you hate money but run a business, maybe you don't want those guys but if you enjoy profit?

Were people here banned for “tearing into someone” or was the ban more ideological in nature? I think it’s more often been the later.

Zoe even said her moderation policies for the past several months were intended to kill the forum. That statement alone justified a blanket amnesty.

Lol if that's the case then not only should anyone banned since then be given amnesty but any staff affiliated with her should be removed.

That might include a lot of the current staff, in fact you might say that anybody who was staff under her was affiliated with her to some degree. So I wouldn’t quite go that far, but I do think it would only be fair and just to reverse all permanent bans.

It wasn't a boneheaded decision. It was a decision made very intentionally in camera to kill the forum gracefully by driving posters away. I then decided it was my obligation to give someone a chance to buy it despite the fact that was my original intent.

I support reviewing past bans, but not granting past amnesty outside of the “no infractions” rule for Politics.

Pretty much this. I've seen enough forums go under because chestbeating and dunking on people replaced productive discussion. It was fun for a while, but it drove away any other kind of engagement. When it was no longer fun, people had no reason to come back. Better that this be a community than a circus with a barker and a freak show.
