Important Going Forward

On one hand I can understand the reasoning for the lockdown. Civil, polite forum, etc. Better than handing out suspensions left and right.
On the other hand - what is the problem with people frothing at one another on the web? It is not that they can harm one another ...
Is there actual danger of the "I will kill you and rape your cat! You smell and your Mum dresses you funny!" attitude spilling over to other sections?

To be fair, tensions have gotten rather high. I know I developed a few more grudges today; ones I will not forget anytime soon.

TBH heated exchanges do lead me into putting people on "ignore" ...
Happily with my sclerosis keeping a Dammaz Kron in my head is not possible :)

The current thinking is to possibly make the Politics section 'Opt-In' by creating a separate user-group. You'd have to have at least 10 posts on the forum without any infractions, and by opting in you'll affirmatively agree that you've read and understand the TOS and civility guidelines, which will be firmly enforced. Violations of the civility rules will eventually earn you being booted from the user-group for periods of time up to permanent. Any discussion of current affairs/politics outside of the user group would be grounds for banning from the forum.

Honestly, my hope is that as we grow as a community that the politics section dwindles in importance. We have some good writers who are starting to post things in Creative Writing, we have artists, we have community threads that have nothing to do with politics, we have quests and story debates and vrs sections and fandom sections. I'd like to see the focus become that, with politics something we do when we're bored of the rest.

When promoting the site I intend to push the non-political areas first and foremost. This doesn't mean that I'm going to ignore politics and current affairs, just I want it to be second fiddle.

I'm definitely onboard with this.

I'm going to be honest here; I think that's a stupid plan.

So you plan to automatically disqualify any already existing member who has gotten an infraction from joining the politics subforum?

dude to be fair the site is called the SIETCH it was always intended to be a sci-fi/geek site first and foremost.
What it was intended to be doesn't really count for much compared to what it is; a political forum, first and foremost. It's literally the reason most of us are here; to discuss politics where we don't have to worry about being attacked by a regressive left backed by forum staff. Zoe was ousted, and rightly so, because she couldn't accept that this forum wasn't what she intended it to be; I'd rather LordSunhawk not follow in her footsteps.

so when SJWs take over something you get ticked, but when people like you take over something then the it's tough cookies.

Since forum control has been handed over, then time for another tough question. Will the previous bans be reviewed and/or commented on. There was something in the appeals and earlier in this thread about that?

OK, in terms of access to the Politics usergroup, I am going to probably amnesty any prior infractions for existing users who are otherwise in good standing (IE not banned) and implement the 'no infractions' policy for new members only.

Note that I am considering some other policy changes and will announce them after they've been fully discussed with staff. When I do so, there will generally be a period of discussion with the userbase before they are implemented.

For reviewing existing bans, that is something that I will consider once I have things on a firmer basis.

For new staff applications, those will open up in a few days.
