It's obvious now but after 9/11 we went into Afghanistan with this "spread democracy and freedom" attitude that pervaded everything. There were people who did know that would never work but at the time they were far too few in number and got drowned out.

I’m not so sure. Oh, no doubt the post-Cold War End-of-History liberalism narrative certainly played a role and helped sell the whole thing to the rank and file and the general population. And while I don’t doubt some of the people running the show believed it, I don’t think all of them did. Or at least not wholeheartedly. These are parasites we’re talking about after all. They’re as good with hiding their emotions as celebrities.

It's really not that deep in this particular case. Sure the military industrial complex profited off of it but their true aim was the cluster fuck in Iraq. Afganistan was a unavoidable reaction to the 9/11 terror attacks.

Yeah, this is what I was worried about, that Hamas would not actually allow the rescue or return of most of the hostages.

Particularly after the stories from those that did get out started circulating, and it became obvious Hamas was not going to return most female captives because of how they had been treated/because they were possibly already dead and Hamas didn't want to admit it.

Because they would've gotten more Hamas casualties out of it, and some nerve gas agents are remarkably easy to clean up by dumping another reactive agent in there afterwards.

Any use of chemical or biological weapons could cause them serious international pressure, something that they already have problems with.

Better to use water, something most people won't think of as horrifically dangerous by default, and there aren't treaties specifically targeting its use in war.
