Hispanics - and Muslims - tend to be in a wierd spot. They're minorities who tend to have fairly conservative religious values that also include some fairly liberal views on social welfare.
The "Fuck you, I've got mine" attitude which conservatives quite frequently exude and extol is off-putting to minorities.

I know a homeless man who has an old Washington University in St. Louis sweatshirt.
That sweatshirt was not a gift. He went there and I have a pretty good idea of just how obscenely expensive WashU tuition is because that's where I went.
He walked away from it all and says he's never looked back.
EDIT: If both of my teenage daughters decide to attend WashU and get accepted I'm basically writing a six-digit cheque where the number just to the right of the dollar sign is equal to or greater than five before single dollar is spent on room and board.
