Military Coup in Niger

Niger next!

The military seems to have already taken control with General Abdourahamane Tchiani (don't worry, he also goes by Omar) citing the 'deteriorating security situation' as the reason for military rule. Tchiani has been the Commander of the Presidential Guard since 2011 (serving through more then one successful coup in the process) and led this coup with the Army of Niger seemingly largely in support of takeover.

Niger has been suffering from an ongoing insurgency including ISIS and Boko Haram in recent years. A few thousand foreign troops are operating in the country, with about a thousand from the United States and France respectively and smaller numbers from other European Union members such as Italy engaged in counter-terrorist operations.

The deposted President, Mohamed Bazoum, was the countries first democratically elected leader to succeed another in a (mostly) peaceful transition of power since 1960. The deposed President is reportedly still alive and in good health whilst under guard. The military coup has been condemned by most international organizations as per usual though Prigozhin of Wagner praised the effort. General Tchiani stated he wants the international partners to continue being friends of Niger and continue their support to meet the challenges ahead.

ECOWAS or the Economic Community of West African States, demanded that the military coup leadership cede power within the week with an implied threat of use of force if they don't and in response the military dictatorships of Burkina Faso and Mali stated they would defend Niger's new military government from ECOWAS and whatnot. All three countries recently underwent military coups after all.

Niger also faced sanctions as a result of the coup as well including closures of land borders, a no fly zone and financial sanctions. France, the US and the European Union have also suspended all financial and budgetary aid to Niger at the moment. The President of Chad Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, not a member of ECOWAS, also visited Niamey, Niger's capitol and asked for the military leadership to step down.

Protests in support of the deposed President Bazoum as well as protests in support of the coup and also pro-Russian, Anti-French, have taken place in the Capitol and elsewhere in recent days.

Burkina Faso's military coup government, in sympathy with Niger's, stated they too will ban the exports of Uranium from their country to France and the United States of America, which might be troubling if Burkina Faso had any uranium to export.

Time to go!

While no final decision has been made on the Embassy evacuation itself, foreign citizens and aid workers have been departing the country. French, British and Italian contingents are coordinating with the Americans in planning these potential further evacuations that may take place.

Okay, what were the motivations behind the coup?

Is the military/a wannabe dictator just wanting to be back in control? Or was the "elected" guy so goddamn awful and useless that the military basically had to step in to try to restore stability? Or was the elected guy actually good at his job...?

I hope ECOWAS doesn't interfere in Niger. Military coup it might be, spreading the War around likely won't help IMHO. Islamic/Salafist activity has increased in the Sahel Region regardless of the Coup or not so investing more military power against each other instead of the Islamists obviously won't help the situation.

The new junta has shut down the airspace around the United States airbase established in Niger back in 2019 but so far has stated their military force is remaining in place and not evacuating as of yet.

Nigeria is currently engaged in talks with the Niger military leadership. Leaders from other countries, such as Chad mentioned before, also visited Niamey, the Capitol of Niger also pursuing diplomatic avenues.

President Bazoum, the deposed Democratically elected leader, has called for international action however.

Still... this doesn't look good and is the latest post on this matter with the Niger Junta announcing the closure of embassy operations for several countries, France, Nigeria, and the United States included.

More like sudden third world war but not the kind everyone was scaremongering about.
Wonder if France will decide to come in and break heads.
Most likely. The French Republic has many interests it’ll want to defend in the area, and local military forces are helpless against a truly modern 21st century army.

So was Bazoum a good leader or was he useless? I don't know anything about the guy.

Here was the latest article in Western media about him from the Financial Times.

Probably disregard that last line...

Furthermore there has been more public expressing of support for President Barzoum as opposed to the deposed leadership in Burkina Faso and Mali (which also had democratically elected leaders who were deposed soon after).

The ECOWAS deadline has passed and there's still no real traction on military action as the Nigerian Senate hasn't even been asked to authorize military force. Instead ECOWAS is sending another delegation to Niger to discuss diplomatic options. Burkina Faso and Mali have also restated their support of Niger's Military Coup.

Non-ECOWAS neighbors such as Chad and Algeria have stated they will not participate in any intervention with Algeria further stating its opposition to military intervention (Algeria like most African Union countries, doesn't support military coups in general) in Niger.
