Niger next!
The military seems to have already taken control with General Abdourahamane Tchiani (don't worry, he also goes by Omar) citing the 'deteriorating security situation' as the reason for military rule. Tchiani has been the Commander of the Presidential Guard since 2011 (serving through more then one successful coup in the process) and led this coup with the Army of Niger seemingly largely in support of takeover.
Niger has been suffering from an ongoing insurgency including ISIS and Boko Haram in recent years. A few thousand foreign troops are operating in the country, with about a thousand from the United States and France respectively and smaller numbers from other European Union members such as Italy engaged in counter-terrorist operations.
The deposted President, Mohamed Bazoum, was the countries first democratically elected leader to succeed another in a (mostly) peaceful transition of power since 1960. The deposed President is reportedly still alive and in good health whilst under guard. The military coup has been condemned by most international organizations as per usual though Prigozhin of Wagner praised the effort. General Tchiani stated he wants the international partners to continue being friends of Niger and continue their support to meet the challenges ahead.
