I suppose to see if it's possible.

Even if it is, that doesn't mean it'll yield "useful" or "worthwhile" results.

Besides, I don't think the construction of a Moon tunnel will begin anytime soon, especially given the Herculean logistics and geo-engineering challenges that come with making even theoretically possible concepts a reality. In which case, I don't really see why they'd waste money on it, when it's definitely not happening within even younger generations' lifetime, let alone theirs.

Sometimes you try something to see what you get. It can be direct useful, have a by product that can be used or at least you have a proof of concept for a later project. This is called science. Even if it fails, you have learned something new.

My point is, why does it have to be on the public's dime that crazy projects like these need to be financed?

Just because it's "science", doesn't make it okay for the government to spend $22 million on endeavors that won't be useful, in the here and now.

Wealthy private entities won't fund "what the heck, why not?" projects like these just to see what happens unless said private entity is either very eccentric or very gullible.

Government setting aside a bit of budget for "this is probably total nonsense but you never know" projects can yield unexpected beneficial results when there are no preconceived expectations of utility in the near future and a good thing.

Murders of police officers rose by nearly 60% during 2021, amid a wider rise in violent crime across the US, according to FBI Director Christopher Wray.
In an interview with 60 Minutes, Mr Wray said 73 officers were killed in the line of duty last year.
Murders of all kinds across the US have risen dramatically since 2019.
Mr Wray said violence against police was a "phenomena" that "doesn't get enough attention".
He said it amounted to an officer killed every five days. Around 1,000 people are killed in the US by police each year, although only a small proportion of cases lead to criminal charges.

Your reminder that Nazism and Adolf Hitler don't play the same in all parts of the world.

New York Post said:
When asked what prompted the bold motif, the groom, Fernando, told Mexican newspaper Milenio that “people don’t know the real story” of Hitler.

“Hitler was a vegetarian, he took his country out of extreme poverty and returned to his people the territories lost in the First World War,” insisted Fernando, who withheld his surname from media reports.

With new wife Josefina, the lovers share two children. Their eldest son, Reinhard, was named after SS leader General Reinhard Heydrich, while their daughter’s name, Hanna Gertrud, was dedicated to German pilot Hanna Reitsch, who allegedly rescued the Führer on the war front, as well as Gertrud Scholtz-Klink, the former president of the National League of National Socialist Women.

The wedding party was crowded with supporters, many of whom also donned German-style military garb.

Alongside the groom, many men in attendance also donned military garb fashioned after Nazi Germany-era s

The backlash does not surprise Fernando as he’s fielded a lifetime of hate mail and death threats. “My dad and my uncles are followers of National Socialism, and since I was a kid I’ve had to face people. I’ve been hit, spit on, and one time a man even pointed a gun in my face while shouting ‘Nazi,’” he told Milenio.

Oh my Bad, it looks like they are actually legitimate Fans of Hitler and the Nazis. not just ignorant or meme'ing.

He also industrially murdered seventeen million people because they were "undesirables", but I guess that went over their heads, for some reason. 😕

They are completely removed from all that. It allows them to either put it off to the side where they don't have to think about it, or to make up excuses for it.

Considering how popular Nazism is popular in South and East Asia, a lot of people don't get it.

Yeah, people in the developing world unfortunately still love Hitler even nowadays:

Yeah, but this is in Mexico...

It's still a part of the developing world, though.

BTW, you gotta give them credit for having fancy fashion tastes ;):
