As for the argument that China only starts with the first dynasty the Qin. I mean that is an argument people can make. But would you make the same argument towards the Greeks? That Greece did not exist until 300 BC when Alexander conquered it? That said, the modern shape of China was heavily influenced by the Yuan and Qing Dynasties, which were not ethnically Han (the first being Mongol and the second being Manchu). The interesting thing to note was that that the last ethnic Han dynasty to unify China was the Tang, when the Tang fell no ethnic Han state managed to unify China, and it took the Yuan to reunify it. The Ming inherited the unified China from the Yuan (who didn't even last 100 years), and ruled for just under 300 years, and then were supplanted by the Qing who also ruled for just under 300 years before falling themselves. The current Mao Dynasty hasn't reclaimed all the territory of the Qing, which is a sore spot, though some of that territory, like Mongolia, was not really a part of China until the Yuan dynasty.
