Omake: View From the NAFFI

The NAFFI at the Merville Barracks in the Colchester Garrison was as lively as always as members of the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment, and soldiers from regiments that were based out of the Barracks came in and out as the grabbed various snacks and drinks or to meet their mates. Others moved to the tables that were set up nearby the bar with various drinks. It was around one of these tables that Privates Hawker and Collins, as along with Lance Corporal Mills, sat.

"So what do you think?" asked Collins.

"About what? The recent Footy game?" said Mills with a snort as he took a swig of his pint.

"No," Collins said sharply, "how the IRA thought it would be a good idea to try and kill the PM."

"Yeah, I heard about that Collins," Mills said with a sigh, "I don't think there isn't anyone who hasn't heard about it! Seriously mate, you need to learn how to understand sarcasm."

Before Collins could make a stupid remark, Hawker cut him off, "So what do you think they will shave us off with part of 5th Brigade? Don't fancy going into that quagmire to do police work."

"From what's coming down the grapevine," Mills said, "No it looks like the 5th is being held as out of continent response as usual HQ Northern Ireland has the 8th Infantry Brigade and 39th Infantry Brigade already, and there is talk of reforming the 3rd Infantry Brigade have no idea if that going to go through or not."

"Bloody white papers," Hawker grunted, and they all nodded.

Collins then asked, "Any idea if they're sending additional Special Forces out to Northern Ireland?"

"You wally," Hawker said, "how would he know that?"

"He could have heard something," Collins said defensively, "he is pretty much wired into the rumour mill."

"They've always been in the country, you know that Collins," Mills said with a sigh, "they always keep a close eye on Northern Ireland. Right now, though, they are liable to see an increase in their sections, though."

"True," Hawker said, "that's just good sense still, though with all these Parahumans as the rags and the Yanks are calling them what a bunch of oddballs are starting to make people nervous, and also I imagine they will get some funny looks too as well as some hate."

"True," Mills said, downing his pint, "then again, anyone who can shoot a laser out their arse or the like probably won't get many insults chucked at them."

"True," Collins said, finishing his pint, "I doubt many of them are bulletproof if we have to tangle with them though we should just be happy we have some on our side."

"Who Guardian and Saber? That press conference she did was cracking," Mills said, "they seem ok made her a minister wonder what she looks like under that mask? Bet she is a looker, I wonder..."

"Don't try it," Hawker said as he finished his pint, "she seems like someone who already has a ring on her finger."

"Oh, and how do you know?" Collin asked.

"because I'm a married man genius," Hawker said, "anyways another round?"

Both men nodded, and Hawker headed to the bar to grab the next round, and Colin looked to mills, who had a frown on his face.

"What wrong?" asked Collin.

"I don't know, but I just got the same feeling I did before we assaulted Wireless Ridge," Mills said as he finished his, "something big is about to happen."

"We won that battle," said Collins, then added, "and the war."

"Aye," said Mills as Hawker came back with the beer, "hopefully we will win whatever is coming too."

Good point. I wanted to know because that seemed a situation where the British government might want to have some Parahuman muscle in the area, if only as a deterrent. But I guess we will have to wait to see how you manage that mess.
Right now the PRC is on a tight rope above a shark tank even though they don’t know it yet.

Honestly I still don't understand what was Wildbow smoking when he made China a monarchy in Worm. I headcanon that the so called Emperor of the CIU is some sort of overpowered Master/Stranger because otherwise it really dosn't make sense with a PoD in the 1980's.

Which part doesn’t make sense?

TBH the way my headcanon goes is there was a massive civil war in the PRC involving parahumans with ether the side who made the best use of parahumans or a parahuman warlord sticking a puppet on the celestial throne Or whatever they call it. Its hard to know with china even though they are a communist one party state the inherited inadvertently a lot of the foibles of the old imperial court so its difficult to pick out the subtle messages.

I am pretty sure China is ruled by a parahuman Emperor, with the help of a parahumans aristocracy, it’s basically just a bigger version of Cauldron predicted Techno-feudalism caused by parahumans.
From I remember, those guys were basically the state-sponsored Parahumans organization before they went « Why the heck are we listening to them? ».

Can’t blame you there but all of them would have to have some form of thinker rating wince you’d meed a low level one to understand the political environment of china and they are trying to breathe life into an old one that gave the Byzantines a run for its money.

Heck the way the closes themselves off hurts them greatly in the long run since they will slide back to how they were under the Qing dynasty. No development except what they steal from other like what they used to do and still do to an extend now adding a slowly decaying infrastructure, civil service and military which will hqppen.

It’s pretty much stated that they are a failed state, but with parahumans power, it’s not nearly as fatal for the ruling elite as it usually would be...
Revolt is hard when your leadership can throw battle tanks around and shrug off missiles.
They can keep the system going by giving newly born parahumans a seat in the new aristocracy, allowing them to oppress normal humans at will, maybe giving them a fief or something.

That only works if none of the other Parahumans don’t get ideas also if the oppressed have nothing left to lose which they need to balance. Also remember not every parahuman is a brute or a high class thinker it only take one idiot with a rifle or a random car bomb. Heck who's to say a Parahuman or Parahumans who follow the ideas of Dr Sun Yat Sen (forgive spelling) decides to take matters into there own hands and organise oppositions.

Also China is mostly anti parahumans feed enough bodies into a fight someone gets lucky.

However you slice it whatever the PRC is attempting will come back to bite them big time I expect an influx of refugees to Hong Kong or for those who can afford the smugglers fees to Taiwan, SK, Japan and every nation they can easily get to sort of like what happened OTL after the Chinese civil war.

I don't know where you got parahuman aristocracy. Canonicaly anti-parahuman sentiment is high and chinese parahumans are conscripted into the Yangban.
Were still in early days of Parahumans popping up like mentally unstable weeds we have no idea how it will all shake out in China right now all I can see given how the PRC usually responds to this sort of stuff is that it will be very messy.
