Because we have media and the world wide web exists.
Without those, we most likely would have wiped them out
That's not entirely true. Al Qaeda was well funded and promoted by Bin Laden, who was a business and economics major from a wealthy family. With Saudi connections. Bin Laden was very good at media and spreading the word, but that could have been done by radio, newspaper, and word of mouth. Media just made it easier.
ISIS is a result of the internet, because they were able to market themselves in a way that Al Qaeda cannot. And ISIS has been more or less broken as a military power. The Taliban have a similar problem; if and once they take the country, they're going to be forced to more traditional methods of warfare in order to protect their territory and rule. Being a militant group that can melt into the region is great when you don't have to make policy, but not so much when you're running the show.
