Fitness General: Diet, Motivation, Body Positivity, and Memes

How has that been working for you?
Well I'm fairly thin by build so it's a decent fit. Severe Arthritis runs in my family and so far I've managed to keep my mobility when other people in the family couldn't move their joints anymore so I'd say I'm ahead of the game.

Well, dietarily I am trying something new. I recently moved from a shared house where everyone chipped in for groceries to a house of my own, and I made a commitment to not buy any snack food. No granola bars, no crackers, no sandwich cookies or chips. I'm trying to lay off the pop as well, and use my powers of miserliness to buy as little beer as possible. All of the meals I make at home have to be cooked from scratch, so I can't hang out in the kitchen and graze.

I weigh about fifteen, maybe twenty pounds more than I did when I was twenty. I'm not sure if this change in diet is going to bring about weight loss, but I hope it does.

As far as exercise goes, I don't get much. About a year ago, I got a job that involved a little bit of running. The running wasn't required, but sprinting from one station to the next was easier than climbing in and out of a truck, so I made it a goal to run a little further each day. I didn't lose much weight, but my cardio improved massively.

Obesity is a problem. It leads into so many other health issues its unbelievable. It increases the chances of cancer for one, is one of the hallmarks of diabetes, and the strain it puts on your heart and blood vessels can lead to very bad outcomes very quickly. No one should be encouraged to stay obese, if they are at all capable of making the change, and I find the social media people that encourage this....disquieting at the very least.

There is a difference between saying "Hey, fatass! Do some situps!" and "Hey, Rachel! You want to come to the gym with me?" One is bullying, the other is not, and the body positive movement needs to learn the difference instead of meeting even the mildest of criticism or concern for an obese person with overwhelming hatred.
Pretty much. In the 90's, we were all taught to be open-minded and accepting of other people. Without a strong moral framework, or even an understanding of one, we've morphed that into an idea that anybody can be anything they want, and nobody else can say differently. Fat people can be fat because they choose to be fat, homeless people can be homeless because they obviously want to be homeless, and anyone who says differently is marked as being intolerant.

So I have never had a huge problem with my weight even if cutting weight for Wrestling in High School was not really good for me.

Overall I also have had the advantage till the last couple of years of having active jobs. From the army to working at the DOT I have generally spent most of my work days in the field. This changed with my last promotion and I am generally more office bound these days.

One thing that has caught up to me is that I am over 30 and I have had to adjust my eating habits. I can no longer down 2 big macs, fries and drink with out consequences. This with a less active job have caused me to change to my diet.

So smilpe thing is that making your own spice mixs for tacos, meats and other food can really help cut down on salt intake. While McCormick makes some good rubs they load in the salt. The next thing is that buying better quality meat can help. Ground beef is a big one. While the price is tempting for the 70/30 Chubb that leaner 93/7 is much better. I also have started eating less fried food and have retired my deep fryer for a new air fryer. It works surprisingly well and you don't lose the taste.

I will second that exercise needs to be more engaging then just hitting the gym. I hike, hunt and mountain bike as my outdoor activities. Most weekends you can see me hitting a state park. It can be a lot of fun. A lot of them have some historical stuff and miles of hiking trails with great views. It is also a cheap hobby compared to most. A season pass and making your own lunch can make an entire day cost less than a trip to the movies.

I also compete with my sisters over Fitbit and we have done a marathon for the last five years together. This gives me a real goal to work towards and helps keep the motivation going. It also let's us siblings stay in contact despite not living that close together anymore.

Terry Crews also has a some decent advice for some one struggling to start

TREAT THE GYM LIKE A SPA.

Yes. It has to feel good. I tell people this a lot - go to the gym, and just sit there, and read a magazine, and then go home. And do this every day.

Go to the gym, don't even work out. Just GO. Because the habit of going to the gym is more important than the work out. Because it doesn't matter what you do. You can have fun - but as long as you're having fun, you continue to do it.

But what happens is you get a trainer, your whole body is sore, you can't feel your legs, and you're not coming back the next day - you might not come back for a year!

I worked my way up to 2 hours a day. I ENJOY my workouts. They are my peace, my joy - I get my whole head together! I value that time more than my shower! And it really gets me together. But it's a habit.

There are times when - I'm not even kidding - there are times when I"m in the middle of a work out, and actually woke up because i am so engrained with going to the gym and being there - it's that much of a habit to me. The first thing I do in the morning is work out - I lay out my workout clothes the night before, and just hop in 'em.

So lay out your clothes, and go to the gym, and relax.

HaAHAHAH!

As for the body Positively movement. The best I can say is that it started with good intentions but the road to hell and all that.

I think that the consent messaging that you should be fit in schools is a good thing. Also that Amercia may have slid to far towards England's banning ads because they make fat people feel bad addtuide. But at the same time we don't want to go on the Japan route. There is a middle ground that can be reached.

I think the best way is to promote healthier foods, education in how to make them with bringing back home ec. Also focus on more hobby sporting then even the level of High School varsity sports. Not everyone needs to be a fitness God but cutting the obesity rate in half should be a major goal at a minimum.

How fat?

I'm at the borderline between healthy and overweight at about 190lbs (86kg). Lions, Tigers, and (most) Bears (oh my!) are larger than I am but I can probably say "I'm bigger than you." to a female black bear that I somehow manage to accidently stumble upon.
I was over 130 kg and I am 1.80 meters tall, so obese as all fuck.
Now, I am around 90, but if you use gut circumference for BMI calculation I am fine.
All of that 30 km+ per day hiking I do when I am vacationing/the weekend plus long walks during the week amounts to some pretty decent leg muscles, and muscle tissue is a lot more dense than blubber.
There is nothing I despise more than fat people, I have been there, I have done that, I still have the XXL shirt that fits me like a loose sack.

Last year IIRC I was doing over 18000 per day on average. And my total yearly kilometers was something close to 5k.
I could have literally walked to China, and then some.
And also IIRC gone from one end of Yurup to the other, then walked back over halfway.
This year the average is about 15k, but I switched smart gadgets in early february, so my stats for the first month were wiped, and late summer/autumn is when I am walking the most because the weather is the best.
Seeing a fatso walking around town or bitching how it is "impossible" to lose weight is something I find profoundly degenerate and disgusting, and indicative of a lack of personal discipline and self-care, or self-respect.
Also, there is an old saying, a healthy mind/soul/spirit lives in a healthy body.

So we're about the same size and I think the highest I've gotten up to is about 245lbs (111kg).

As for walking. It's good that you get out and stroll for the kinds of distances you describe.

I can't do that anymore. I can only stand for about two hours (three, tops) before paramedics get called.

Ouch, that is awful.
Although you can probably try some alternate exercises, like weights.

*shrugs* Age and injuries catch up with you and I don't really need to stand for more than a few mintes at a time unless I'm doing fieldwork ... at which point a roll of drawings, a ladder, a 2ft-by-3ft clipboard, and a messenger bag filled with tools @Zachowon might have trouble lifting get brought along for the ride.

Try an exercise bike; that's what I'm getting because it's low-impact on joints, and you can do it at snail's pace if you put a film or something on in front of you to keep your mind off it.

My family has the plague of ankylosing spondylitis -- basically you have a crapshoot 50/50 chance of getting it, and my father has it, my uncle has it, and one of my aunts has it. For the last ten years or so (I'm 34 as of yesterday), the pains in my back and spine have been getting worse, and there's no doubt Lady Luck decided to "eh, here's some luck at blackjack but fuck you and your spine, lolol" me.

So, yeah -- exercise bike and low-impact weight-training looks like it's going to be my go-to solutions for not being a fatarse anymore (oh no, I derided Body Positivity despite being a fat cunt myself! However will I sleep at night! /s).

I'm leaning how to fight myself.Got a makeshift punching bag and so far an ax and a baseball bat have felt the best in my hand hoping to upgrade to a sword at some point. hopefully things don't get bad enough I have to use them against a person but it's exercise, and honestly feels more satisfying than a gun. Even if you don't mind being fat, physical activity feels nice

Might I suggest Aikido. That martial art was specifically created to subdue an attacker without injuring them.

I have driven 2 cheap-ass exercise bikes to breaking point.
Literally the places where the pedals met the part going through the middle broke, and soldering it didn't work for one, the other's belt wore out and there was no tension, ly efforts repairing them were initially successful, but wear and tear eventually took them out completely. Also, I think soldering new pedals to the whatchamacallit probably cost more in man-hours than what was initially put into the bike.

@LTR Yeah, I think a lot of this stuff needs to go to a thread about wellness or something like that.Points if you put in Ubermenschen and degeneracy in the title. :)

Throwing my own hat in the ring, I do swimming, walking, gym, jogging etc. A bit of everything really.
