It went into the shutter with Capaldi. Which was one of the best actors to play the role, but I just lost interest then.
I never even bothered watching female doctor or gay black doctor.
I also think the Fandom had something to do with my losing of interest. I mean, you see someone with a TARDIS bumper sticker or something and you pretty much know all about them already. And they're not the type of person that I tend to like a whole lot.

It's BBC. As I noted earlier, it's always best to assume that every series you enjoy that was written in the last century was written by the sort of leftists that, in a sane country, would be imprisoned in asylums. Or normal jail, in some cases.
That's why you should never be surprised when they move with the current milieu of the Far Left. There is only so far that their financial sense can or will restrain them.

The show is easily fixable. There are plenty of ways to write or retcon the sludge of the last several years.
The fanbase however is completely destroyed. That isn't fixable but must be rebuilt.
It's the same with star wars. The only way to restore its former glory is to get on their knees, admit fault, decanonize all of the Disney stuff, and BEG for forgiveness.
It will never happen. They are too proud, too blind, and too happy that they destroyed a cultural icon and put their mark on it and made it theirs.

At this point? I think they would be better off abandoning the property for a decade or two and trying to make some original sci-fi. they would need to hire good people to make it and work on it though and not hire based on the diversity check boxes so that is unlikely at best.

Narcissism in three phases.
Phase 1: "Everyone thinks like I do," so clearly everyone will be willing to resolve things like they are.
Phase 2: "Some people don't think like me, but once they are properly taught to do so, the problems will be solved," I refer you to phase 1.
Phase 3: "I am far too important and clever to not be the key to solving any problem I consider worth my time." The ego of the modern leftist intellectual hinges on how they can and will solve all the problems that those losers who came before them couldn't.
Some are just in it for the grift of course, and some others out of hatred, but this covers a surprisingly large swathe of them.

All three major factions that govern the world are so wedded to their dogma that the only way this can end is with another Vietnam or Berlin Wall Collapse. Something that will force everyone to admit that becoming excessively fanatical isn't actually reaping any benefits, and that they can't ignore reality anymore.
Liberals need to learn that violence, applied lawfully and moderately, is the only way to preserve rule of law. Communists need to learn that the free market is the only way to diminish the suffering of the working class. The nationalists (including Islamists and Christian Nationalists) need to learn that they do actually need to compromise and work with other people.
We don't need to learn anything, except maybe not to roll our eyes in public.
