First off, the article takes the claims of some guy who got kicked out of Mossad barely after training, in 14 months, but made money off sensationalist books.

It probably depends on what is meant by malice. I believe the broad-strokes accusation is that Israel did everything it could to delegitimize and cripple peaceful opposition, even unto the point of aiding violent opposition. So (if you grant the accusation) malice is involved, but not specifically "my objective is to get Jews killed" malice.

Nah, Iran playing regional superpower and giving them support despite the sectarian divide is what enabled the current situation. Mid 80's is few years after the revolution, so no one thought they would ever go this far survive this long or be this pragmatic in pursuit of power. No one knew Soviets are about to fall either, or Islamists about to rise globally. Naturally the faction that had most powerful patrons and also was most militant at the time at the time was considered more dangerous, with the thinking that even if Sunni Islamists hate them, they are crazy shitsters who have no powerful friends and a lot of enemies so good luck getting weapons or money for them lol.
