It appeals to the downtrodden and those who can use it to manipulate others for their own gain because of the veneer of equality and fairness it provides.
Of course, just a glancing look at history will tell anyone with two brain cells it's complete and utter bullshit.

Communism has always been pushed by the oligarchs and financed by them.
It is literally the oligarchs robbing middle class to create under class, then telling the underclass they created that it was all the fault of the middle class (borgouise) whom they need to rise up and kill and then abolish all commoner rights because "trust us, honest".
Communism is pushed in schools, on children, at the behast of the oligarchs
No, the appeal of communism, that it brings everyone down to an equal status, is a poisonous and deceitful lure to the downtrodden, desperate, and those who think it'd be better than their current system. People fall constantly into the same trap, with the stupidity of "it wasn't real communism" as an excuse for its constant and repeated failures.
The oligarchs know it's bullshit, push it, and use it to exploit people for their own gain. But that deceitful lure? It's always going to be there. They use it, but don't create it.

It’s one of the few things on a very, VERY short list that I agree with the Soviets on. Same with the Nazis.
Of course, both weren’t free of freaks, but at least they were nowhere as widespread as they are in the West with our own elites. Which isn’t high praise.

If communism had such appeal to downtrodden then the oligarchs wouldn't need to astroturf it so hard.
As seen from literally every peasant revolt in human history prior to the invention of communism, the downtrodden will join any revolutionary that comes along and offers them something. especially if he is already well funded (which communists always are). Communism carries exactly as much appeal as any other "overthrow your oppressors" rhetoric.
Communism history is always the same.
Oligarchs drive up to the ghettos they created and go

They actually like to use the term "Peasant" pretty sure that's intentional foreshadowing.
Communist revolutions follow the same footsteps as other revolutions have in history, no matter the pretext -- that it offers something better than what the people have at the moment.
Communism's false lure is that everyone is equal. That's the appeal.
That sounds a hell of a lot better than, say, a dictator taking over and favouring a special few (which is ironic because this is what a communist state becomes anyway, haha), an ethnicity or racial group becoming dominant and persecuting others (thus other racial groups in a country being oppressed and causing tension), or a religious ideology becoming the guiding force, with "unbelievers" or those considered "lesser" basically spat on -- we see this especially in the Islamic world between sects and Christianity sects in the past.
Each of the above will put one or more groups at a disadvantage while others, an advantage. Communism is supposed to eliminate that problem while also appealing to people's more darker parts of human nature -- "getting free shit" (which, ya know, is complete bullshit but that's what's expected).
The elites/oligarchs and others like them know how to use this to exploit people with less than two brain cells to rub together, and the desperate people out there. That's why they "astroturf" it so much -- they're making an already appealing philosophy more appealing by promoting it for their own ends, and it only helps sucker people in; it's not the sole way it's spreading.
It also doesn't help that out of control capitalism, as seen in the US, is making this false lure seem more and more sweet and tempting to bite.
