Potential Civil War or Succession Crisis in Ethiopias Northern Tigray Region

The Tigray People's Liberation Front, the state government of the province of Tigray within Ethiopia, apparently launched an attack on a military base in their region, prompting a strong military response and deployment to the area from the Federal Ethiopian government. Back in 2018 the TPLF was removed from power in a popular uprising that dismantled their ruling coalition but they've commanded the State government of Tigray ever since. They've been a refuge for former regime officials and in September held an election of their own which was considered "unconstitutional" by the new federal Ethiopian government. The Tigray region is comparatively more wealthy and influential in Ethiopian politics, having had a strong influence ever since they were the main force behind the removal of Ethiopia's previous Marxist government in the early 90's.

It's feared that this conflict could destabilize an already unstable region in the Horn of Africa. Despite its own issues, Ethiopia has been far more stable then its neighbors in the region which include nations such as Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and Kenya and while the Ethiopian government deals with issues in the Tigray region, its feared that Somali/Islamist insurrection in Ethiopia's Ogaden region could spark and rise.

Quick update.

The Ethiopian Army and random militias from neighboring states have moved into the Tigray region and according to the Government have been making strong advances in the region.

Hundreds are likely dead already, thousands displaced and things are sonbad that people are fleeing TO Sudan of all places.

In an equally shocking development 2019 Nobel Peace Prize Winner President Abiy Ahmed has rejected calls for peace from the international community.

😕 Behold my shocked face.

No one can create peace like a Nobel Prize Winner!

“From now on, the fighting will be a tank battle,” spokesman Col. Dejene Tsegaye said late Saturday, asserting that the army was marching on the Tigray capital, Mekele, and would encircle it with tanks. “Our people in Mekele should be notified that they should protect themselves from heavy artillery.”

Ethiopia’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, in a new statement is giving the leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front 72 hours to surrender, saying that “you are at a point of no return.” He accused the TPLF leaders of using religious sites, hotels, schools “and even cemeteries” as hideouts and using Mekele residents as human shields.

But how can you protect yourself from heavy artillery if there are no hideouts from said heavy artillery? Mwahahahahaha...

Peacefulness Intensifies!!!

2019 Nobel Peace Prize Winner President Abiy of Ethiopia has now brought peace to the once wayward Tigray Region.
“I am pleased to share that we have completed and ceased the military operations in the Tigray region. Our focus now will be on rebuilding the region and providing humanitarian assistance while Federal Police apprehend the TPLF clique,” Abiy stated on Twitter after the Ethiopian forces captured Tigray's regional capital of Mekelle after reportedly a 'heavy bombardment.'

Since the conflict began on November 3rd, it's believed thousands have been killed and at least forty thousand refugees have fled the region. The TPLF however has vowed to continue fighting in spite of the alleged success of Abiy's proclaimed 'final offensive.'

It appears there were a series of explosions, around six, that rocked the Eritrean capital of Asmara, as reported by the US Embassy located there. Eritrea is a neighbor of Ethiopia and fought its own bloody and successful war of Independence against Ethiopia back in the 90's. It's currently being assumed the origins of the explosions are from Ethiopia in general, especially since the northern Tigray region shares a border with Eritrea. Some are alleging that the TPLF is behind the explosions specifically.

honestly letting Eritrea become its own country was a horrible mistake, it took away ethiopias access to the sea and created one of the worst countries on earth.

Well, you can blame the Italy for that, they controlled it as a separate colony for half a century, exacerbating earlier divides

Actually Britain might have a spot of blame there. They should've just given Eritrea back to Italy because everyone except Ethiopia (including the natives) AFAIK wanted Italy back in Eritrea. Italy actually invested a lot into Eritrea and the Eritreans into becoming an ideal and modern African colonial possession.

But Britain preferred keeping Italy in a box at the time and was afraid they'd go commie as well. Which is why the Soviet Union supported giving Eritrea back to Italy as well. They too were hopeful for a Communist revolution in Italy and thus Eritrea as well.

Like, his Nobel Peace Prize may be funny in context of this mess, but what he was supposed to do, ignore that Tigray arrests federal officials?

Husky Khan is of course sarcastic, obvious in this context IMHO.

On the other hand. I genuinely see nothing surprising in federal Ethiopian reactions to one tribe arresting federal officials and attacking military base.

As far as African states go, federal military seems to be even competent. Excellent - honestly. Better to end this in two months than destroy lives of civilians during 15 years of mess.
