RIP Former US Secretary of State & former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell 😔

General Colin Powell has passed away at age 84. May he rest in peace.

I’m not going to say anything overly bad about the man, given that I think pissing on the dead shortly after they die is in bad taste if nothing else, but I can’t say I’m overly moved by his passing.

Powell was another neocon, establishmentarian like McCain and Bush. Not exactly being moved to tears here.

My best to his family, I suppose.

From what I hear, he was not bad in the military sphere of things. It was mainly when he was SECSTATE that he grew disliked.

Iraq has still always done better for us then A-stan

We at least had a reason to go into Afghanistan, to hunt down Osama and his backers, but there was absolutely no reason to go in and kick over Hussein’s regime…Besides Bush’s daddy issues I mean.

We should have never been in Iraq in the first place. There was no strategic or tactical reason to do so, and doing it massively destabilized the region and severely weakened one of the major counterweights to Iran.

I mean.
They did have WMDs. They were moved before we got there.

That is about it.

Iraq still has been better then A-stan. At least the Iraqis fight against ISIS

The problem wasn't Colin Powell being a SecState, it was a military member being SecState. They see a problem, they see military as the solution. It's a bad idea.

The military would fix a lot of situations
Only when kept on a tight leash.

Once off the leash you get bullshit like WWII Japan where the IJN and IJA basically did whatever they wanted and weren't answerable to the government. Sometimes subordinates went off the rails and not even those at the top knew what was going on.

Fr'ex: Tojo wasn't even informed that the IJN lost four aircraft carriers at Midway until seven months after they were sunk.
