Saw Riddick on Netflix. I think all three of the scifi films that feature Vin Diesel's character Richard B. Riddick are on the platform now. I remember seeing Riddick ages ago and thinking the first half of the film was great and the second half... merely decent. But watching it now, almost a decade after its release, I gotta say I liked watching it again. It's a good movie, Riddick is a great character and while I still think the second movie of the trilogy, The Chronicles of Riddick, is deeply flawed, I wish the franchise had more steady success. I would've much preferred seeing a strong Pitch Black franchise then a Fast & Furious one.

Also of more immediate interest I saw the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves film and liked it. Talked about it more in the thread dedicated to it.

I only really like Pitch Black out of all of them. Riddick had some nice fan service from Katee Sackhoff (and could have used a bit more in all honesty ;) ), but that was about all it had going for it IMO.

Congratulations to the Louisiana State University Tigers Women's Basketball team on winning their first national championship in program history 102-85.

I think a dynasty has just got started in Baton Rouge.

There are two games about Riddick with Vin as the VA, and they are really good stealth RPG games

Escape From Butchers Bay.

I liked both games as well but Escape from Butchers Bay had better gameplay and stealth mechanics... which is unfortunate because Assault on Dark Athena had a really good story and setting and some of the best characters/voice acting I've seen in a video game. It was a phenomenal script. Vin Diesel really seemed invested in making the game great from what he could control. And the gameplay was still solid.

Lot of great lines I can sorta remember...

Little Girl: The Monsters. They'll catch me!
Riddick: Now the Monsters will have something to fear.
Little Girl: Are you hiding from monsters too?
Riddick: Not hiding... Hunting.

"I don't prove anything to anyone."

"Typical coward with a gun. Don't understand the pain he inflicts on others because he's never experienced it himself. I'm gonna change that."

"Nobody wants to die but everybody gets to."

"When I say good bye it's forever."

And some of the best quotes after a Boss fight and before the death of said Bosses

Boss: I could've got you...
Riddick: If it's any consolation, you were better than average.

Different Boss Battle: Don't forget me.
Riddick: Your used to living hard, so dying should come easy.

What made that last comment surreal is in context, it almost sounded like he was comforting said villain.

I've been watching Vinland Saga which has been impressing me with the setting and characters. It has also inspired me to add captured slaves to my most recent goblin camp in my D&D campaign.

I liked the Manga when I was keeping up with it like a decade ago, but the update rate was glacial, and I eventually gave up.

Saw Rampage on Netflix. The 2018 movie based off of the classic Arcade game, not the Uwe Boll Rampage trilogy from a decade prior.

It was extremely mediocre. Another of those big blockbuster movies with really good acting and special effects and little else. And the actors had to struggle with how bad half of these characters were written. Like... I don't even know what Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Government Agent character was supposed to be honestly.

The movie took over half of its length to actually do anything interesting and we spent a lot of time with these boring ass Human people doing Human shit discussing monster stuff. Also there's a lot of acting towards greenscreens, it was really obvious during some scenes, like the ending. Wasn't a big fan of any of the monsters either. Didn't really have much personality or character IMHO. Which actually, is a thing I noticed and could've been improved on. But yeah, the overall plot was pretty balls.

The big ol' monster fighting the military scenes were fun and there was plenty of devastation wrought. So that's something. Unless your one of those types who wants to relentlessly nitpick movies on how useless the military is... then maybe you won't like it as much. But I found those bits enjoyable.

Also the movie wasn't faithful to the game lore and honestly, if it was faithful to the extremely minimal game lore, maybe it would've been more interesting and offered more plot fodder than having two random wild animals an an albino gorilla transformed by bioweapon dust into super sized regenerating hyperaggressive murder-animals by actually having the monsters being Humans transformed into the aforementioned monsters like in said Arcade game lore.

But I Dunno.

4.9-5.1/10

If you like seeing Jeffrey Dean Morgan laughing at greenscreens off camera though, this is your film.

Babylon 5 season 5 episode 16

I find the "let's go to war!" scene to be rather incredible. Sheridan plays a video file of the attack, and the ambassadors just accept it at face value and start crying out to go to war against the Centauri. You'd think that they would have adjourned for at least a few days as Sheridan's evidence was forwarded to be analyzed by each member nation's own research labs for confirmation? It's just as dumb as Shepherd playing a soundbyte and the Citadel Council turning on their best agent on the spot without taking the time to analyze the soundbyte or verify how he got it, let alone consider other options before jumping to the most extreme one.

Sheridan is a bad president. Rather than put his foot down and say "no, we are not going to war with the Centauri right this instant", he instead caves in to the emotionally reflexive ambassadors' cries for war. Does he have so little belief in his own authority as President of the Galactic Alliance that he thinks he has to do whatever is most popular or else it all falls apart? He has known these ambassadors for... what? Five years? They have placed their trust in him how many times? Even when they were nervous and afraid and in the dark on Sheridan's true plans? Also feels weird that after 5 harrowing years together, Sheridan doesn't seem to be closer to any of the league ambassadors. He should at least have reliable friends among some of them.

Obviously the heroes are not omniscient like we the audience are, but there should be enough curious things about the attacks to give them pause. "Why would a secret Centauri fleet would attack random passenger liners with no strategic value to provoke a galactic alliance of Humans, Narn, Minbari, and the League of Independent worlds that together almost certainly defeat the Centauri? Hm...". Also, the Centauri only felt confident going to war against the Narn after they had secured the aid of the much more powerful Shadows. The Shadows are now gone. Why would the Centauri alone feel confident going to war with the Narn + many other worlds? It just doesn't hold up if you stop to think about it.

Season 5....executive medling and the showrunner didn't have enough time to pen out a script. I mean they thought Season 4 was it but season 5 was added on last minute.

Right now I am watching Doom Partol. It is only on D.C streaming so it mainly got overlooked. But I borrowed a freind's account to watch some Young Justice and this caught my eye.

It is a misfit hero team with pretty poor powers overall. But the dark humor and the fact that Doom Partol doesn't take itself to seriously made it fun to watch. Overall I would recommend this show only if you have DC universe already. I wish that D.C. joined a larger streaming service if they off things like this. But as much as I like the show it is not worth the subscription alone.

I am also watching the new season of The Expanse on Prime. It remains one of the best Sci Fi shows on air. The drama, acting, and special effects are still at the same quality of season one. While the new plot twists have expanded the story and added some new layers. It is a must see for any Sci Fi fan.

So what are you watching and what you recommend for others?

I have finished Babylon 5.

I find it bizzare that Sheridan doesn't seem to have made more close friends during the 20 years after the show takes place. At the end he only summons a half dozen people from his stint on Babylon 5. Also feels conspicuous that all of them survived the 20 years. Even in TNG's future epilogue All Good Things you had at least one person who didn't make it (Troi).

The show was overall good. It wasn't the masterpiece it's fandom hyped it up to be, but it was enjoyable. It did stand out to me that they kept phrasing stuff in Judeo-Christian terms. "The darkness and the light" and "we answer to a higher court" (what court?) or "faith prevails" (faith in what?) and so on, but it feels vapid since the show doesn't believe in any one true God or is grounded in Christianic morality. This isn't a problem specific to Babylon 5 specifically: lots of fantasy that riffs the aesthetic of LotR's grand epic struggle but leave behind the underlying beliefs suffer from this.

The show didn't overstay its welcome. I can only think of one episode that I skipped. Can't think of any particularly unenjoyable episodes. DS9 ran for 7 seasons and there are many episodes I just don't find enjoyable and skip whenever I rewatch that show.

I think one issue with the show is that you have to question who you are rooting for. In Star Trek, you are rooting for the Federation. When the Klingons or the Romulans or the Borg are threatening the Federation, you want the Federation to be protected. You want to see what happens next. In B5, the Earth Alliance is never likeable so it's hard to care about any threats to it. Every representative from there is an asshole. Almost every other race - Minbari, Centauri, and Narn - seem to be more likeable, but you don't really see what life is like on their homeworlds, only see one or two characters from them on the station. So once the show ends and you find out that there is a novel about the Psi Corp, you have to wonder "why care what happens to the Earth Alliance?" Or a hypothetical sequel series following David. "Why care what happens to this setting?".

I guess the only other thing to comment on is the production values and aesthetics. The big bulky Vorlon costume really spruced up the look of the aliens, but sadly after Kosh and his replacement were gone from the show, you're just left with a bunch of humans and humands with rubberheads. Not that I dislike rubber-forehead aliens but its kinda samey. Star Trek made the setting prettier with Robert Stromberg's gorgeous matt paintings of cities on Bajor and Cardassia and Ferenginar, and I liked the physical model spaceships more. The CGI locations and spaceships of Babylon 5 don't look bad but they're just not appealing to look at. Also, the music tended to be overall forgettable for me. The only track I can remember is that remix of the main theme during the first season.
