In Honor of the Oscars, I've been spending the past few weeks when I have free time watching Academy Award winning and nominated films as well, largely because I want to educate the younger generation on the rich cinematic history Hollywood has given us over the years that, year after year, is fading from view thanks to a film industry that seems to be dedicating itself to empty, soulless Hollywood blockbusters that are nothing but mindless splatterfests of gore, violence and White Supremacy. To that end I showed the impressionable young lads and lasses a carefully curated list of award winning, critically acclaimed films on their favorite platforms.

Such as:

Expendables, Expendables 2 & Expendables 3 which were all available, "free" to watch on Amazon Prime. Of course it wasn't my Amazon Prime account, but that didn't stop me from showing three wonderful films that were released that star some of the titans of Hollywood's Golden Age (the 80's) including such luminaries as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis. We learned, laughed and cried (in laughter) over the numerous set pieces which showed the true state of the world and how CIA sponsored mercenary companies are often our first and last defense against a colorfully whimsical cast of supervillains who deal in drugs, nukes and nukes again and dominate all of the areas of the World that aren't the West!

Total Recall. Tell me, what should you kid watch to appreciate Science Fiction besides a dozen Star Wars movies? Star Trek? No. That's boring. Blade Runner? LMFAO GTFO! Predator? I wish... but that's behind a paywall! Why... you watch the celebrated 1990 science fiction, action SPY thriller Total Recall, once again starring that guy from the Expendables and that clip of Predator (KILL ME! I'm right here!) that my Kid somehow had already seen and thinks is hilarious. All jokes aside, this is a terrific film and definitely right up there with other Paul Verhoeven classics like Robocop and Starship Troopers (which I haven't used as educational aids yet). I did have to fast forward all of the scenes with the three titted mutant Martian lady of the night though... I forgot that was in this film. 😬 It was also fun pointing out how 1990 movies thought the future would look like!

Big Trouble in Little China. Let me just say...this movie might've been their favorite. It's a film beloved by people of all races, especially those who are ambiguously Asian. This is the film that Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is going to want to be (if it fails miserably) because it has a wonderfully diverse cast of mostly Asian and some White people. It has a simply told but delightfully complicated story with wonderful world building, great set pieces, character designs and memorable... everything. This is a movie that they just won't be able to make anymore and I'm sorry The Thing, but I like this film just that much more. It was also fun telling the youngling how Kurt Russell's character wasn't really the hero, but actually the sidekick in the whole film (just like most famous White Men in all of history).

Terminator. If you want to teach your kids the danger of Big Tech, this is the film to get them started on the pathway of becoming Doomsday Preppers. Hook them early and it'll pay dividends later. Starring that guy from the Expendables and that clip of Predator (yes this is a running gag), despite being made in 1982 or whatever. The movie didn't feel dated at all beyond the fact it was set in the grimy world of post-Jimmy Carter America and the action scenes and special effects were top notch. Can't wait to get around to showing him the ONLY sequel to this film someday!

The Quest. Because Bloodsport wasn't available. Try harder next time JCVD. But I mean... it was liked. Bored does hit back you realize.

Resident Evil. Wasn't as good as I remembered. That's nostalgia for you... or maybe the fact the sequels get increasingly horrible. I mean it wasn't bad... it might've even been above average... but ehhh... still won Best Director for Paul WS Anderson that year... it would be the first of six Best Director nominations he received for his work on this series IIRC. Honestly the younger you are, the more you'd probably like the sequels to be honest.

Off the top of my head... of these eight movies we just watched, I think we had at least 8 Best Picture Nominations... at least three Best Picture wins, a half dozen Best Directors, and by my estimation.... fifty seven Best Acting (and four Best Actressing) Awards. And I'm pretty sure Total Recall won best Cinematography as well.

Once I get a blu-ray player hooked up I can unload all manners of shitty DVD's and Blu Rays upon impressionable minds.

There are other award winning movies I do wanna show... such as Predator, The Mummy, Commando, True Lies, The Running Man, the aforementioned Bloodsport, and potentially Rambo II and/or III among other historical films.
No Alien/Aliens? Tsk tsk.

No Alien/Aliens? Tsk tsk.

Aliens might be fine but the two films are pretty horror centric and the former a bit less actioney. Keep in mind this is to educate the young next generation on the pinnacles of film history.

We can probably endure a few skinned bodies of Hopper and his team in Predator but the Aliens stuff can be more intense. Don't wanna add (and deal with) Nightmare Fueled outcomes. :p

I forgot the early Die Hard movies. Those are classic tomes of knowledge as well.

I've watched Office Space again a few days ago. I don't think I fully appreciated it's genius the first time I watched it. Probably because I didn't work in an office back then... A must see comedy.
*shudder*
I have been mystified by why anyone would watch such since first seeing it. A friend was a big fan and tried really, really hard to get me into it, but...I cringed at the things he laughed at and found very little of interest. It just seemed so...bland and uninteresting.
Of course, I'm willing to admit that I've never worked in an office before so maybe that impacts things. But, even that aside...I dunnow, character interactions generally should be able to make-up for a lot and in the office they...don't.

...Though I suppose it might be relevant if you watched the British or American version--I only ever got shown (some might say 'forced', even :p ) to watch the American. I've heard the British is substantially different in tone.

Anywhore...Don't mean to jump on you or criticize. Just have had that complaint percolating in my mind for a good long while at this point and have gotten into the habit of bringing it up for the grand cause of annoying the friend who forced me to watch some of the show. :p

As for me...
Went to digging through old DVDs of me and the sister's and found Gladiator. Haven't watched it for probly seven or eight years at this point at least, and it still holds up great. Sure, the history is unrepentantly and shamelessly fudged and out-of-focus, but it's not so much a historical epic as it is a character one that has Rome as a backdrop that's not meant to be focused on overly (and/or meant to be pop-culture Rome more than reality-Rome, damn you Ridley Scott!).

But Rome aside? Russel Crowe does a fantastic job making sure all the audience focus is on Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Phoenix Legions, loyal servant of the true emperor Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, and husband to a murdered wife who will have his vengeance in this life or the next...instead of 'WTF Ridley Scott!" complaints.

It has also served to remind me that Russel Crowe is in another historical epic that I've always been curious to check out because I hear lots of good things. Master and Commander is probably going to be something I dig through a bargain-bin or maybe even bite the bullet and order from someplace to watch since that 'Wooden Ships Iron Men' stuff has always kind of gotten my goat (even if the Napoleonic Era is a bit late in the game for my personal preference).
Bonus: I get to see more of Russel Crowe fighting 'round the world...From back in the days when he was quite handsome as opposed to kind of...having let himself go a bit. Man's a good actor--deserves more recognition.

...I am an idiot who needs to learn to read more gooder. My brain just completely skipped-over 'space' in its entirety.
You're not an idiot, you're just inattentive, like 99.9% of anyone on the internet. And I've tried watching The Office with my wife... After the pilot episode we both decided that there's no point watching the second one.

I would recommend it.

It has enough action to stop the movie from feeling slow while showcasing the short intense action scenes. This is especially true while the movie takes places over time as they chase the enemy over weeks.

They also show case a lot of the life aboard a sailing ship even if it is mainly from the officer class. It shows the little moments like stopping to resupplied from locals and random islands. The bits with the doctor shows how life aboard the Navy ships look to outsiders while showing the British military throughout the age of sail a side hobby of being naturalists and explorers.

But the biggest plus is that the movie really does show how much more freedom to act Captains and far flung military units had before they where a telephone call away from home.

The movie also is soild in acting and other technical aspects with a shout out to the sound track. Showing yet again how a more classical bent to movie soundtracks is timeless for a reason.

Oh the Woke Squad shows. I made a post about them in the Wome fiction thread. While I do like parts and the action can be fun even if L.A. should have sunk into the sea or be at Mad Max level by now. But it has a problem of being over the top woke. 911 does a better job of thining the Wokness down then Lonestar but I still find my self tuning out parts when the Wome level reaches 9,000.

As for me I am Watching Modern Family on Peacock. Over it is a fun show that reminds me of a lighter version of Parenthood. Also like Brooklyn 99 they manage to make interesting gay and minority characters which are sorely lacking in most shows. I do have to admit that Cam the gay uncle living up to a gay stereotype one moment then brings out some fram life or football thing really makes him an interesting character.

The problem is the first season isn't that good, which people forget. For sitcoms, just start where it's good, in this case about the 3rd season. But if you don't like cringe comedy, you won't like it as it runs on that.

The only thing I'm currently watching is Invincible. Really like it, and the voice acting - especially Omniman's - is top notch. I found out all six seasons of The 100 are on Amazon Prime ("free") right now, so I might start watching that once I got the time.

Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead comes out today on Netflix. It came out in theaters a few days earlier.

I was initially excited about a new Zack Snyder zombie film since his Dawn of the Dead remake launched both his career and a new wave of zombie media since it was such an awesome movie in its own right. But with every trailer and revelation I've become steadily less and less excited for this movie to the point I'm now basically meh about it and my hopes for it being lukewarm at best now. I think I really lost all interest in this film when the latest trailer showed Batista getting into a knife fight with a zombie and the zombie is apparently super intelligent and smart or whatever and can hop and jump around his slashing attacks. Looked pretty derpy to me.

Also the social media fangasming over Tig Nigaro being on the cast was pretty cringe as well.

But I got the Netflix subscription so might as well give it a go since I got some free time this evening.

Army of the Dead spoilers as I watch the movie.

> Forced Tarantino Dialogue... definitely a good sign of a high quality film maker.
> These two soldier characters are terrible. Is the idea to make them likable or relatable or something? Because I don't care. Not funny or interesting or anything.
> Please show Las Vegas getting stormed by zombies... Please show Las Vegas getting stormed by zombies... Please show Las Vegas getting stormed by zombies... Please show Las Vegas getting stormed by zombies... Please show Las Vegas getting stormed by zombies... Please show Las Vegas getting stormed by zombies...
> Oh they're going to have it happen in the opening credits Zombieland style.
> Correction there's only like a minutes worth of Las Vegas getting stormed by zombies. The rest is a narmy and overly stylized montage of scenes to introduce the characters and other cringe.
> Oof... if Batista's acting chops are going to carry this movie... Oof.
> "The first sign of infection is belligerence. Actions outside of the social norms."
> Wow this is some heavy handed social commentary here. Quarantine camps filled with illegals and people who are Pro-Choice on Abortion. Abusive government guards disappearing people and terrorizing them with temperature checks. It's already proven the infection is instantaneous but whatever.
> All of the characters introduced in the montage I forgot about as they are introducing them again nice and proper building their Heist Crew.
> Tig Notaro is reading her lines... at least Batista is trying. Tig's a liberal, why wasn't she thrown in one of these camps?
> Is that Michael Jai White?
> Fuck it's just some other muscular Black guy whose shite in comparison.
> HA THAT RACIAL JOKE WAS SO FUNNY! Michael Bay must've wrote it.
> Bad idea firing that comedian and replacing him with Tig Notaro I feel.
> Hey it's Cromartie/Garren Dillahunt.
> Wait... the Coyote actually is a French woman? I thought she'd be portraying someone of Latinx background... okay whatever. We'll just pretend it makes sense.
> Another Narm alert. "If I knew she had kids I wouldn't of taken her." Oh this Coyote has a heart of gold.
> Some YouTubers, a Latina Mechanic, a Doctor, a French Smuggler, a Black Soldier, a Professional Wrestler, an effeminate German thief, and a racist, sexist police officer walk into a Zombie Apocalypse.
> Sorry no more buses, better run if you don't wanna get nuked... ARRIBA! This evacuation is more sobering then the Fall of Saigon in '75.
> I'm yawning... this is actually boring me Zack Snyder... stop.
> Oh huh... a Zombie Tiger... 2011's Zombie Apocalypse did it better and with less CGI.
> 'The zombies are intelligent and organized and to pass through their territory they must be offered a sacrifice.' Duuurrrrrr
> ONE HOUR in and no zombie action beyond the opening crapshoot.
> Tig Notaro did a funny monologue, minus the humor. This led to another witty exchange of banter. Still no zombie action.
> And now they must tiptoe past a horde of hibernating zombies. This should be suspenseful but... its not.
> Seventy minutes in and we get to some ZAMBIE FIGHTING!
> NO... NO MORE TALKING! Stop with this... it's boring and I don't care about any of you.
> Not Michael Jai White did his Oscars Acting Clip. It was pretty random.
> If the corpse being found is going to be a problem... why not just hide the body somewhere then ffs. Your surrounded by ruins!
> Ninety minutes in and I'm watching a terrible Heist scene trying to be funny. Could use some more zombie action tbh ngl.
> Why isn't the tough Latinx Mechanic up on the roof helping with the dilapidated helicopter? Is it because Tig Notaro can't be filmed with anyone or we don't want anyone to sully Tig's hilarious and powerful screen presence.
> Oh thank Saint Romero, they're moving the nuclear bombing up, now the movie has a definite endpoint unless the Zombies learn to fly or mutate wings or something.
> Also the least impressive heist scene I've ever seen in a film I feel. Your average episode of Leverage had way more intricate heist scenes.
> 105 Minutes in and still at one action scene. Stop trying to act... please...
> Another Yawn.
>Oh here we go! 106 minutes in! ZOMBIE FIGHT!!!!111
> Course not really zombies since they can dodge and block and punch and kick and whatever like a normal Human stuntperson.
> The Gore from a person getting their head ripped backwards would be a lot more graphic if it wasn't CGI... just saying.
> Stop betraying each other for slight temporary advantages you fucking idiots! I guess that zombie movie trope is alive and well.
> Fake Michael Jai White is getting into a martial arts fight with a zombie
> If it was real Michael Jai White this might be cool
> Don't worry he'll survive. I saw that he did in the trailer.
> I never thought getting mauled by a Tiger could be filled with so much CGI and wire effects to make it look this terrible.
> How can you be out of ammo? This is like the second action scene in the entire movie.
> Maybe y'all should've worn long sleeves for bite protection... but then again... who would've expected zombies?
> Talk about a pointless self sacrifice scene...
> Stop ACTING! Just stop...
> This final fight man... Laugh out Loud moments abound.

Imma giving this four outta ten.

None of the characters were really interesting, it was really bloated and boring and filled with sentimental narm. The action is servicable and the acting is terrible which is strange because usually the acting in bloated blockbusters is usually pretty good and everything else is shit. Also lots of CGI and it's not good use of it either. Fails as a heist movie, fails in delivering any sort of drama or social commentary. The humor was cringe and reminded me of Michael Bay stuff only less funny. Also Resident Evil 8 Village is just such a good game in comparison to this movie and its "creative, original new take" on zombies. You'll see what I mean.

Also it's like too long.

Oh wait there's a credits scene...

Oh FFS the place was nuked... no one can just walk out of that...
Stop with the fake endings and sequel bait.

Army of the Dead isn't too long, per se. Its about 150 minutes, and honestly, you need that amount of time for most movies to really shine. Its hard to make a deep movie any shorter than that.

The problem with Army of the Dead is it doesn't do enough with its run time, and it wastes too much effort in building tension/drama.

Usually you'd think building tension is a good thing, but there's a point where it flips and nothing is tense because your default assumption is that something bad will happen, and its so certain you don't really care anymore.

Here are some dumb decisions made in the movie:

1) Of course, the Dunce Crown belongs to Takano, the Military Guys backing him, and his Agent, for trying to actively sabotage an extremely difficult mission. I mean, they want the head, didn't they? They don't even really value the $200 million. Its never really explained why they are saboteuging the mission. There are definitely a lot smarter ways to kill the people if they really want to, after the mission is over and the military has secured the samples they want.

2) What Bautista should've done (and would've done, had the movie not been handing him the idiot ball) was force someone to stay behind and babysit his daughter to stop her from going with them. Their combat effectiveness (and ability to get in and out quickly) would be severely hampered with him (inarguably the most effective combatant) having to play babysitter.

3) The black dude never uses his chain saw. What the fuck? Why do we have a dude with an awesome looking chainsaw who never uses it for some great zombie slaying?

4) Maria's death was so ridiculously telegraphed it was ridiculous.

5) A zombie wearing a helmet is invincible. its not like they could, y'know, shoot its legs to make it more difficult for it to move. No, just shoot its helmet, where the bullet will ricochet no matter what!

Overall... I can't recommend it, and I have to say I was very disappointed.

I felt a lot of the acting was actually pretty good. it was the script that the actors were given that was bad.

Saw some excellent horror movies to cleanse the palate of Army of the Dead.

1BR
and Sweetheart, both on Netflix IIRC. 1BR had a great setup of taking a tired plot of a young woman moving to Los Angeles and finding herself in an almost too perfect apartment she scored as a rental, with a fairly weak middle and then an ending act that was up and down in quality I feel with an ending that was a bit too much but overall... a very solid film. Not a pure horror film but when it strayed from the genre it was weak in some areas but better in others. It leaned more into being a thriller soon enough and did a decent enough job with it. But it didn't spend long enough time building up the tension and dread in the beginning which was the best part of the movie. Good acting. Good characters. Would recommend a watch.

Somewhat surprisingly Sweetheart despite basically being a creature feature or monster movie, was almost perfect horror film wise. Kiersey Clemons was the main character who portrays a woman who survives a boat crash and is stranded on a deserted island. She later finds out there's something.... else... there. It's a great movie with survival themes as well and Kiersey having to act a lot just with the scenery since she's by herself. The movie however never gets boring or drags and conversely never feels rushed either. The main star did a great job with the role and the monster reveal and design is fantastic.

Then... because I hate myself. I watched Zombie Tidal Wave on Tubi. It's starring Ian Zierling of Sharknado fame and this is... no real surprises good or bad. It's not nearly as bad or campy as any of the Sharknado movies and tries to play itself somewhat straight with overdone Zombie movie tropes and the like. But it's still solid low budget, B-movie Zombie Horror film stuff which is actually a compliment because that means that despite being SyFy channel quality its still head and shoulders above lots of shitty zombie movies out there. Also... great lines like "It's a zombie tsunami."

Like Zombie Tsunami would've been a way better title for the film. But the smartest line in the film is "A biological weapon is worth more on the black market then any anti-aging drug." O RLY? Are we sure about that? ANY biological weapon? Any Anti-Aging drug? Sounds like an awfully blanket statement there sirrah!

So I justed watched Tomorrow War on Amazon Prime .

It is an action movie with the basic plot that the humans are being killed by aleins in the future and time tra el back to get help from current day. They are mainly looking for bodies to throw into the fight so the world goverments institute a draft and Chris Pratt gets drafted.

Overall it is an average movie but has some problems. Thankfully this movie is a change from the current Amazon line up BLM inspired woke stuff they have been pushing for the last half a year.

The movie has a decent lead up to the action when Pratt gets drafted. They do a decent job of showing the lead and general dispare the wrold is going though. It does use some common trops s bit to much. The main over use is the estranged dad with ex special froces skills and the common team in the barracks with the dopey new guy and bad ass veteran. Over they spent to much time on characters with limited screen time.

But the fight scenes are good snd the aliens are well done. They look like aliens and have interesting features like spike throwing tentacles.

They do a good job of world building and adding in small details in background to round out the world.

Over the movie does feel slow at times gor an action movie but a decent Saturday lazy day movie.
