My main concern with this is how the Taliban will treat women after we are gone.

You can end open conflict, but keeping certain barbaric standards of treatment for women from returning is far harder to prevent.

The thing is, this type of evil is present throughout the Muslim world. Pretending we have some special duty in Afghanistan while ignoring the worse state in Saudia Arabia is just blatant hypocrisy.

I'm of two minds on this. I'm glad this conflict is coming to an end and no more will have to fight and die in that shithole country that time forgot and probably will forget again. So Amen to that. Now, while I want peace and I'm glad Trump is making good on being the Peace maker, I'm not sure the Taliban will honor the treaty.

During the war they had numerous ceasefire agreements with the US and the Afghanistan government. All of which they broke. I'm not too worried about them regaining the country as their power is more or less broken. But they can become a regional problem for sure. And those tend to fester.

It all would have been over in 5 years if Pakistan wasn't a backstabbing asshole of a country.

It would have been over in the first two years honestly. Special Forces had those fuckers on the ropes. The organization was literally on the ropes and desperate when they sought sanctuary in Pakistan. And Bush never called them on it. Thus they were allowed to recoup losses, only for us to trounce them again, and again, and again.

I swear it was almost cyclic. We'd smash them, they'd retreat to rearm, train and rebuild, then about a year later they'd be back in force only to repeat the cycle. Fucking Pakistan.

This is pretty much you had one job meme territory.

I think the virus will keep them both busy and develop an appreciation for Western medicine.

Not much worse than how others treat them. Apart from those ninja coats and education, the violence against women isn't any less prevalent in government areas, with government only doing token effort to contain it, so they can satisfy the foreign donors. And at least talibans opposed the widespread pederasty, unlike the government and USA.

I thought Muslim Terrorists ironically were a bunch of douchebags who while going on and on about “sodomy” were also raping men and boys and “punishing” them after?

That said, regarding islamic treatment of women, can’t change it via occupation

At the very least for non islamic majority countries, they should stop romanticising or downplaying their difference in social values

Well, technically you could...
Just disregard Pakistan cutting supply routes, and UN whining about human rights and stuff...
So yeah, didn't happen, and isn't going to.

That does raise a greater question:
How much blood and money should western countries spend on keeping foreign islamic men from mistreating foreign islamic women in the stereotypical way?
I think the sentiment is very much against "world police" initiatives like that.

At this point i think it's just about USA disentangling itself from the situation while saving face. There are no reasonable objectives or goals USA could pursue by staying that could be fulfilled with realistic and politically acceptable methods and resources.
Since then, whatever happens, US government can just say "well, Afghanistan is a sovereign country, we no longer have anything to do with it, and any of its many problems aren't our problems, finally".
Lets see who would a "regional problem" in Afghanistan be a problem for, really? Iran? Russia? China? Pakistan? Is USA really interested in keeping these countries free from regional problems?

That's a part that makes this situation unsolvable. Can't win this sort of war while at the same time relying on a country that shelters and supports insurgents for your own supply lines while pretending it is an ally.

Reminds me of how Russia keeps the Chechens pacified.

What I mean is that the change must come from the inside

Closest thing to interference? Financial support for say ACTUAL feminist groups who aren’t romanticisng Islam and actually come from the native population

Or even getting companies to be “entrepreneurs” who make schools for boys and girls and even adults with the intent to as much as possible, expose them to things that would slowly cause them to question and resist the current status quo

Okay, TBF there’s the problem of yhe majority population going crazy due to difference in social values and government forces shutting those groups down. FORCIBLY

You throw money at the local warlord while he makes sure that what happens in Chechenya stays in Chechenya. And lots of "fun" stuff is happening there.

A similar situation to Syria and the search for mythical moderate rebels.
What feminist groups? What would these women's husband or father say if they tried?

What you seem to be forgetting is that Afganistan is not a lawful and tolerant country. You don't do activism like that without heavy military protection. If you did, within days some rather miffed bearded men with kalashnikovs will show up and want to have a "talk" with the company's personnel and the children's parents.

@Marduk
Okay, guess the situation is hopeless, thing is, one major barrier is the romanticism of the local culture and religion

I doubt many will admit that Islam has gotten very very very regressive in values in a bunch of countries

So Trump disentangled US from Afghanistan, humbled Iran and made peaceful overtures towards north Korea by taking a personal risk and actually going to the country. This is the madman who almost started WW3 6 times by now, apparently.

Obama stirred shit up in Libya, Syria and Egypt, resulting in ruination of countries and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dead people. As well as not ending any of the other number of ongoing conflicts.

Who was the one that should've gotten a Nobel Peace Prize again?

If he can GTFO out of Iraq too, he's going to make people happy and mad.

How much of the USA actually remembers or knows that stuff?

Information can be publically available and still be ignored or disbelieved or said to be fake
