No driver's hatch?
That is unclear, It could just be that it was too hard to put on a scale model. On the K2 Black Panther its covered by the turret though

You can actually see it underneath gun manlet on the model.

Yes, that’s definitely a BPU-1 turret, which was originally developed for the BTR-60 and was later borrowed for the BDRM-2, as well as remaining in use with only very minor updates on the BTR-70 and BTR-80.

No BMP had that distinct conical one man turret, although the BMP-2’s turret looks a little bit like an enlarged version of it (two man and with a 30mm auto cannon instead of the KPV).

Well, you gotta admit they're making it work with what they've got.

In all seriousness, the BPU-1 turret is well-suited to improvised installations, because it only requires that a 1.075 metre turret ring be drilled in the top of the vehicle; the turret is a drop-in mount with the gunner's seat suspended from it and requires no electrical power or fire control hookups, being small and light enough that it can be all-manual in operation without being slow and clumsy.

Yep! It's an ingenious and pretty simple set-up, like technicals. If it works, it works. :)

To be fair, it's not without its downsides; the BPU-1 turret mounting provides substantially better protection than an open pintle mount, but has very limited visibility, especially upwards.

It does have its downsides, yeah, but its job isn't to try to cover for aerial threats (e.g. aircraft); I could, however, see a problem if there were enemies on an elevated area or garrisoning a tall building e.g. apartment blocks, though.

The KPV and coaxial can elevate all the way up to 60 degrees, so there's no issue with that. The problem for AA use is that the gunner doesn't really have a good field of view, having only the optical gunsight, one general-purpose periscope, and one rear-view periscope.
