Been having a sordid thought for a while, but just to share: I'm wondering what the fate of the Church is in this scenario?
Myself, I'm betting that even with (or perhaps, because of) the "Third Great Awakening" needed for the Far Right to become "Neo-Crusader" cultists, odds are the Catholic Church is getting gutted and many of its members butchered by Neo-Crusaders who cast them off as "Satanic Globalists wearing Christian vestments!" or something asinine.
There are a couple of components to this, though the first that comes to mind is possible "subversion" of the Church leadership in the coming decades. Luckily, Francis hasn't gone quite that far, but in the event of a downright Liberation Theology Pope being elected and spewing Leftist talking points with a Catholic bent ad nauseam, you can bet angry and populistic youths who want Globalism gone won't like that at all and may see toppling the Papacy as fair play, too.
Going hand-in-hand with that, I wonder what the likelihood of a new sort of "dark spirituality" arising amongst the increasingly impoverished, desperate masses is? Heck, that's literally the case in Mexico right now, with the
Cult of Santa Muerte being an exceedingly bloodthirsty and criminalized variant of traditional Santa Muerte veneration where ritualistic killing and torture are celebrated. And given that this has bled across the US's southern border somewhat, I'm rather concerned by the possibility that an "Americanized" version of the Holy Death cult — which, upon reflection, would be quite compatible with the anti-material and apocalyptic Neo-Gnostic faction that might take power — catches fire among impoverished youths heading into the 2040s and '50s.
Naturally, I doubt the Catholic Church would take kindly to either one no matter their leadership, which would again paint big red targets on their backs once the Far Right comes for them.
