Things get worse in The Southwest

We of all people should be using nuclear thorium for example is very promising technology.

but the problem wont be solved until after we crash and burn and the economy implodes, only once the parasites leave the state can we start to fix the problems they caused.
Yup! They'll never do this because "nuclear power is evil".

Hook a desalination plant up to a dedicated nuclear reactor, and you'll have more than enough potable water for the city. The only downside to this would be the salt-waste, but even then whatever damage to the enviroment from the salt-waste/concentrated brine could be prevented by diluting it over a wide area in the ocean.

Actually, increasing salinity of the oceans would be a net good; helps offset the additional fresh water being released by melting glaciers.

Concentrated salinity in one area damages wildlife and the local ecosystem (such as at the end of a pipeline) -- especially if the area is key for fishing and tourism. If the concentration is spread out/dispersed over the area of, say a mile or two, then there would be no damage or environmental issues.

A pipeline that goes out into the ocean on the seabed, with multiple release valves along the way, would be the simplest solution.

(Edited because I forgot the 'along the way' bit. I need tea, haha).

Well yes, single point release or outflow of salt would mess up the local biome a bit.

But as you say, there are options for addressing this issue.

Yeah, the Sea of Cortez has been suffering serious ecological damage for a long time because it needs the Colorado river to flow into it to keep the salt content down and said river hasn't made it past California in a long time.

Can't they sell the salt from desalinization to make money or is it non-edible?
You need to combine it with tube coral samples to make even more drinkable water.

More seriously going off this Yale report, it looks like it's cheaper to just concentrate the salt by sifting it through as osmotic membrane and re-releasing the more-concentrated brine than take it all the way to pure water and salt. There are plants that produce salt as well but my Googling suggests it's much more energy-intensive, hence costly, to do it that way.

IIRC there are actually a lot of chemicals mixed with the brine, so they'd need to separate it all again for companies to make use of the compounds -- it's not cost-viable? These chemicals are harmless to the enviroment but not harmless to us.

California new rules on livestock, meat will have to be "California Approved" Labeled. Most meat will not be able to be sold in California under new rules.

CORRECTION; YOU WILL NOT BE HAPPY.
BUT THAT'S OKAY, BECAUSE YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE HAPPY.
YOU ARE ONLY PERMITTED TO BE AFRAID.

Say goodbye to your bacon.
Westbound and down, loaded up and truckin'
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm west bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.

Keep your foot hard on the pedal. Son, never mind them brakes.
Let it all hang out 'cause we got a run to make.
The boys need bacon in 'Francisco, and there's pork in New Mexico.
And we'll get it there no matter what it takes.

Can really maximize your smuggling-profits by using the bacon as packing-peanuts for overly-powerful hard drives...And I guess if you wanted to be boring and uninventive you could run guns as well, but that's so unoriginal! :p

Indeed. This is just going to kick corruption into overdrive as enterprising citizens decide to drive illegal articles into California and sell them at a high mark-up. Oh, how I wish to live in a state neighbouring California right now.

I make a few trips to Arizona a year and it's 6-8 hours from LA to Phoenix, the real population centers in California are on the west coast, not inland. But I'll get get plenty of bacon when I pick up tortillas like I already do when I'm in AZ and might get my next PC in that state too. Fuck California's sales tax anyway.
