Apparently the point behind all the modern trappings is that this is intended to be cyberpunk in genre, not fantasy like the original novels. That's what happens when nobody involved respects the material being adapted, and only see it as a marketing gimmick to sell their own garbage to unsuspecting consumers; it turns into an in-name-only exercise in narcissistic futility.

Screw the mainstream western entertainment industry; it ruins almost everything it touches these days. Your best shot at finding anything decent is either digging up something old, obscure, or made in a country with a culture untouched by our woke nonsense, like Japan or India.
