The mistake many in the west have made is not apologizing, it's assuming the people demanding the apologies are acting in good faith.
Rush Limbaugh, for example, has made apologies for when he's thought he overstepped boundaries. He apologizes, moves on, and completely ignores anyone who tries to keep bringing the issue back up again, instead talking about actual issues and the wrongdoing of the lft.
Go in prepared with examples of the left's wrong-doing, and rather letting them rant and rail at you endlessly, instead pull out facts about actual wrongs committed by the left, and demand they admit their own wrongdoing. For example, the riots and deaths in the riots after Floyd's death.
If they can't admit the left has problems too, tell them to their face they're dealing in bad faith. If they refuse to admit that groups like BLM go overboard, 'because it's okay when black people do it,' call them out as the racists they are demonstrably being.
The problem isn't admitting that there have been mistakes made. It's letting the other side control the narrative in the conversation you are having right then and there. There's little you can do about who controls the media, but you can control some of the discourse you are directly engaged in.
