may I ask too? I know a little details but not much.
LI was involved in a private discord that has some membership crossover with TS that kicked him for continual breaking of that Discord's rules. In a fit in the aftermath he began sending harssing PMs to staff members and calling out TS staff on his wall on a percieved conspiracy concerning his failed bid to purchase the site including revealing private correspondence between himself, Zoe, and other staff members. For this he was just given a temp ban. Upon receiving this temp ban he began to attempt to gather personal information about staff members up to and including spear phishing attempts against some, who were informed of the efforts by the organizations he contacted to attempt to gather information from. After further discussion and communication with law enforcement and the relevant staff members security officers from their places of employment, it was decided to elevate his ban to permanent.

Suffice to say, his ban will not be up for review.

To be honest, this "multiple accounts" thing seems like a bad idea to me. Would be better if mods just used one account, and don't moderate the threads they posted in.
Zoe was nice. Very ideosynchratic and we'll spoken. Even if you don't agree with Zoe, the debate was well worth having.

That's why I think it's a tragedy that the schism happened.
Tragic it might be, but she decided to go behind our back rather than being open about what she wanted, and I think we are all better off for her selling the forum.

The current thinking is to possibly make the Politics section 'Opt-In' by creating a separate user-group. You'd have to have at least 10 posts on the forum without any infractions, and by opting in you'll affirmatively agree that you've read and understand the TOS and civility guidelines, which will be firmly enforced. Violations of the civility rules will eventually earn you being booted from the user-group for periods of time up to permanent. Any discussion of current affairs/politics outside of the user group would be grounds for banning from the forum.

Would the primary goal of this just be to limit new members from using the politics thread until they show good behavior? Subforum bans seem like they would already do the job of booting people from specifically politics, unless I'm misunderstanding those. A separate user-group seems like a complicated way to achieve that, but then again I've got no idea how the mechanics of this place work so if that's how you have to do it, that's how you have to do it. Could you just prevent anyone who still has like a "new member" tag from posting in that subforum?

I'd worry about long term creating a rift between the Politics user-group and the rest of the forum, since that sort of thing seems unhealthy for forums. I guess that's a long term consideration though, and if you're worried about keeping the lights on here right now, it probably doesn't take priority.

Honestly, my hope is that as we grow as a community that the politics section dwindles in importance. We have some good writers who are starting to post things in Creative Writing, we have artists, we have community threads that have nothing to do with politics, we have quests and story debates and vrs sections and fandom sections. I'd like to see the focus become that, with politics something we do when we're bored of the rest.

When promoting the site I intend to push the non-political areas first and foremost. This doesn't mean that I'm going to ignore politics and current affairs, just I want it to be second fiddle.

I think it would be wise if we left politics closed for the next month. People around here have other forms of communication. The sub-forum thread has been shut down how many times in the past few months? Give it a break, let people talk about it elsewhere.

That said, I would recommend having two different forums. One labelled "Rumors & Kneejerks" where people can speculate and guess and another more formal sub-forum where we can deal with facts and actual political positions. Because I see a lot of people kneejerking to news and spreading gossip instead of actually debating real politics.

Honestly, I think this site's natural niche is as a draw for right-leaning creative types (and their audience) that suffered from politically-biased moderation at other sites. (Or for that matter, left-leaning creative types who found the mods nominally on "their side" to be a bunch of officious jerks.)

The irony here is that as far as I know, most of the mods here only have one account. Spartan, LTR, Tippy, S'task, and most of the old SB mods only use one account here to my knowledge. Only Zoe and a few of her friends like Comet used alt accounts to any major extent.

That said, I agree this policy is a problem, it greatly put a rift between the users and staff over the past few months. For instance, when Timothy C kept arguing about politics with other users, locking threads and suddenly people kept getting unknowingly getting temp bans for minor offenses from Devastator it didn't really paint a pretty picture on the staff when it was revealed that Timothy an Comet were one and the same.

In other honest words I would suggest Sunhawk phase out this rule.

EDIT: Also Urabask why are you still banned doesn't your infraction expire this month?
