I remember clearly the octopus was used in many political contexts each one of them was of different political alignments, so the accusation about being an anti-Semitic motif is moot. It was used against anyone who had or has excessively far-reaching political abilities : capitalism (Standard Oil), communism(Stalin got represented as an octopus at least once, same thing goes for early Maoist China in 1950), Nazism (Hitler got represented as an octopus at least twice) and I am pretty sure even Dick Cheney or another VP in the US got represent as one as you see below :

The thing you realize is that there's no off switch. Just doubling down until a physical barrier is reached.
