Star Wars Star Wars Discussion Thread - LET THE PAST D-! Oh, wait, nevermind

Yeah, except the Expanded Universe was terribly inconsistent to begin with, and includes numerous elements that are absolutely ridiculous, plus even more that are difficult to reconcile with any sort of common sense. I would be a fan of a reboot that retained more of the EU than the Disney wipe, but at the same time, total retention was never realistically possible or even desirable.

I bid Dark Greetings to you all, though.
To some degree, yes. But you had books that smoothed out the contradictions and most authors did try to make everything fit together with their stories.

Things only went badly wrong when the CGI the Clone Wars series came along and make and absolute mess of the established lore. And while it might have been fixable given enough time, the damage was done. Never mind how it was used as the thin edge of the wedge to push the idea that pre-Disney Star Wars lore was a giant contradicting mess by ideologues at Disney.

Robert Downey Jr as Karrde. :p
Nah...I always pictured Karrde as someone more substantial. Russell Crowe comes to mind for him.

Thrawn would need someone with the screen presence and charisma like that of James Spader though I'd like someone younger.

I'd actually prefer Mara Jade and the rest to be new faces if you can find someone appropriate and skilled enough.

Given how he has presented Brother Day in the series Foundation, Lee Pace for Thrawn.

Speaking of making movies out of the Thrawn Trilogy, who would have made good picks to portray the new characters? Thrawn? Mara Jade? C'baoth? Karrde?
ScarJo for Mara, RDJ for Karrde, and for C'Boath...I wonder if someone could convince Ian McKellen to try out for it.

RDJ would be great for Karrde, Karrde's damn near Tony Stark levels of suave and classy; Russell Crowe would be too serious to pull off Karrde's personality.

They already have Thrawn VA slated to act as live-action Thrawn as well.

Edit: Actually, there is someone Russell Crowe would be great for; Booster Terrick.

I think ScarJo is way overused, and while Mara is certainly a badass with agent training, she’s also *very young* and her personal development has been heavily subverted by the Emperor’s manipulations.

Total retention of the EU was never a goal. I think everyone would agree that that's kinda crazy.

But there were some great things in the EU. Disney could have gone for like 15-20 years just mining and adapting the best bits of it.

I still get depressed thinking of the really great rogue squadron TV show we could have gotten or the thrawn trilogy of movies.

Speaking of making movies out of the Thrawn Trilogy, who would have made good picks to portray the new characters? Thrawn? Mara Jade? C'baoth? Karrde?

The truth is that even in the mid-'90s, the OT cast was visibly too old for a live-action Thrawn Trilogy adaptation to be easily done. (Consider that Hamill and Ford were both already older than the characters they portrayed in ANH, and then the trilogy that spanned four years was filmed over six years.) Basically, by the mid-'90s, the actors were on average a decade too old; more the age they'd be in Vision of the Future (19 BBY) than the age they'd be in Heir to the Empire (9 BBY)

I'm all in favour of adapting the EU (with a bit of stream-lining to cut our or tweak the really-too-hokey stuff) to the screen, but I don't think live action was ever an option.

If they gave me control of LucasFilm and a big bag of Disney money right now, I'd get far away from the bad taste of the current "canon", and instead start adapting the more ancient stories of the EU... as high-budged, high-quality animated series. Put the Jedi origin story on the screen, show the Force Wars on Tython, adapt Tales of the Jedi and KotOR (both the games and the comics). Not to mention Knight Errant. There's a whole load of stuff in-between that's been mostly glossed over thus far, too. And then we can work all the way to the last of the great Sith War, culminating in Bane's grand plan.

That would be many years' worth of material, right there.

After that, who knows how good all this 3D, deepfake, neural net, what-have-you stuff will have gotten? Maybe by then, something that looks exactly like a live-action version of the post-RotJ EU could be put on the screen. And then you can put book-only characters on the screen precisely as you imagined them.

But if that's not workable, if it still gets you 'uncanny valley' results, then it's just as possible to adapt the post-RotJ EU in an animated format, too.

After all, even today, you have people adapting Heir to the Empire as a fully 3D serial, and while obviously not "real studio quality", it's very impressive, and getting better with every released chapter. Look at the recent release (chapter 22) here:

It's only going to get better, as far as "look at what I can do on my home computer!" is concerned. I think that not altogether too long from now, we won't need a big studio to adapt the EU to the screen. We'll be able to do it ourselves. With even better quality, and with less effort than the current efforts require.

Too true.

We need to find a new smoking hot redheaded actress. Given Hollywood's ongoing gingercide, there's likely a sea of untapped talent out there.

Only soulless actresses I can think of off the top of my head that are like early twenties with the chops are Sophia Lillis, Sadie Sink and maybe Annalise Basso, probably in that order.

Don't think Sophia might fulfill the *smoking* hot requisite either though I feel she's quite attractive. Sadie might not either.

Even Kaya Scodelario and Jane Levy are like in their thirties now. Open up the age moar, there'd be more casting prospects.

Totally agree with this.
...maybe Emma Watson, then.

She's fiesty enough to play Mara, if we give Mara a British accent.

Or maybe get Jewel Staite; seeing the whiplash from Kaylee to Mara would be kinda funny.

They definitely made valiant efforts to retcon things into harmony, but. . . "The events of the Jedi Prince books as told in the books were abridged and censored bedtime stories Leia told her kids, but the basic events *did actually happen*." is still deeply bizarre, especially when they then doubled down with the specific detail that Kadann and the Prophets of the Dark Side really exist, it’s just the ones the Rebels met weren’t actually them, but Imperial agents pretending to be them as part of a bizarre long term plot by Palpatine to discredit them.
