Turkish-backed attack on Armenia by Azerbaijan with formal declaration of War

Arch Dornan

Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.

Kaboom. The Bear is warning the Turk to think rationally before thinking of getting bigger ideas on the Caucasus.

On Friday during talks in Geneva both sides agreed that they "will not deliberately target civilian populations or non-military objects in accordance with international humanitarian law.” These talks have been sponsored by the Minsk group of the OSCE, which is co-chaired by the United States, France and Russia.

I understand the support for Armenia in light of past Turk crimes against them, but I'm not gonna lie--I'm not really in Armenia's corner for this. I prefer to remain detached, but if I have to express an opinion on it; the territory does technically belong to Azerbaijan and the Armenian regime got themselves into this mess.

First, they decided to favor Western relations in Europe over Russia. So Putin is not really happy over the current administration's anti-Russian narrative. In addition to that, the Armenian government also made claims on Turkish lands. Finally, instead of continuing negotiations with Azerbaijan for a peaceful compromise, they began to build roads and populate the formerly dominate Azerbaijani regions with Armenians to both strengthen their hold and claim.

When you're a landlocked power and you piss off two major powers to the north and west, then proceed to flip off the more or less equal power to your east...well, you sort of deserve what you get.

The only power that they've got support from is Iran. Because Iran's northern region connecting there has a large amount of Azerbaijani and the Iranians have an informal agreement with Armenia as a way of keeping tabs on the region. And even Iran has had to scale back their support, because they're worried about rebellions in their minority-dominated areas.

So yeah, Armenia's government screwed the pooch on this.

And Kosovo technically belonged to Serbia, until USA decided it doesn't. But yeah, Armenian leadership messed up.

Well, I'm not saying that Armenia didn't have any legitimate cause to retake the region, but we shouldn't treat them as if they're innocent babies. They happily used soft ethnic cleansing to strengthen their hold in the region. And then they were dumb enough to alienate Putin and piss of Turkey. Two of the three major powers surrounding them, while being landlocked.

It's the purest definition of mental retardation. Germany, France, and USA far away. Turkey and Russia are very near.

Azerbaijan has stated they captured Shushi which is the second largest city of NKR akd only a short distance from Stepanakert. Armenia has denied it.

What is known is that there is fighting within close distance of both cities and Stepanakert is both still being bombarded and many more residents are fleeing the town today.

The Armenian reaction domestically is pretty rough...

And some details on the Russian peacekeepers, who are already deploying to the area for their planned five year deployment in the NKR.

And the agreement itself (translated from Russian).

"We, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan I.G. Aliyev, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia N.V. Pashinyan and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, have stated the following:

1. A full ceasefire and all hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone are declared from 00 hours 00 minutes Moscow time on November 10, 2020. The Republic

of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia, further referred to by the Parties, are moving on their positions.

2. The Agdam region and the territories held by the Armenian Side in the Gazakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan are returning to the Azerbaijani Side until November 20, 2020.

3. A 1960-strong military contingent of 1960 troops with small arms, 90 armoured personnel carriers, 380 vehicles and special equipment is being deployed along the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the Lachin Corridor.

4. The peacekeeping contingent of the Russian Federation is being deployed in parallel with the withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces. The period of stay of the russian peacekeeping contingent is 5 years with an automatic extension for the next 5-year periods, unless either Party declares 6 months before the expiration of the term of intention to terminate the application of this provision.

5. A peacekeeping ceasefire control centre is being deployed to improve monitoring of the parties to the conflict.20

6. The Republic of Armenia returns the Kingdom of Kelbajar district to the Republic of Azerbaijan until November 15, 2020, and the Lachin district until December 1, 2020, leaving behind the Lachin Corridor (5 km wide of Karabakh), which will provide the connection between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia and will not affect the city of Shushu.

According to the agreement of the Parties, a plan for the construction of a new route along the Lachin Corridor, providing a link between Stepanakert and Armenia, will be defined in the next three years, with the subsequent redeployment of the Russian peacekeeping contingent to protect this route.

The Republic of Azerbaijan guarantees the safety of traffic along the Lachin Corridor of citizens, vehicles and cargo in both directions.

7. Internally displaced persons and refugees are returning to Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas under the control of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

8. Prisoners of war and other detainees and the bodies of the dead are exchanged.

All economic and transport links in the region will be unblocked. The Republic of Armenia provides transport links between the western regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Hakhichevan Autonomous Republic in order to organize the unhindered movement of citizens, vehicles and goods in both directions. The transport traffic is monitored by the Russian Federal Security Service's Border Service.

According to the agreement of the Parties, new transport links linking the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic with the western regions of Azerbaijan will be secured."

Unsurprisingly there are many military age men who oppose the end of the war by violently protesting far from the frontlines.
Eh? I mean it takes a while to join the army, and get trained. The war lasted six weeks. By the time these men were ready for duty it would have been over.

I will post a breakdown of what happened tonight but the TL;DR is that the Azeris were able to achieve local superiority of 10:1 in numbers on their main offensive thrusts and they won the war with disciplined infantry tactics despite the buzz over the drones.

They have conscription army, so unless they dodged the service, most of the protesters would be reservists. If they felt so much about the honor of their country they could have volunteered for active service anytime during the last six weeks, it's not like the army was turning back folks.

And it’s not like it would have mattered.

But they would have done their part for the country, instead of demanding from the safety of the capital that the guys on the frontline should keep dying in the war that is already lost.
