The yandere isn’t really the equivalent of a bad boy though. There are differences, like the fact that the yandere is totally obsessed and devoted to the object of her affection and bad boys are usually aloof from the girls who want them, they aren’t faithful and may have other women on the side.
Though I think that the differences extend beyond that. The desire for “bad boys” likely has evolutionary roots very far back in our history. Before civilization when tribes were constantly warring with each other, it wasn’t unusual for one tribe to take another’s women as sex slaves and the women basically went along with that just like female lions do when a male lion kills her cubs. You had the tribal chief saying that he just conquered your tribe and you’re going to have his warrior babies whether you like it or not, bitch. Also, a male who is desired by many women, who is promiscuous and likely aloof from any one woman, has traits which attract women and so would pass those traits on to his sons. The bad boy is a guy who captures that tribal chief vibe. Now, in the modern era he may not be much of a warrior or have many good qualities, and some women have maladaptive selection preferences and can’t tell style from substance, but they still have that attitude that appeals to that primal part of a woman.
The male equivalent of that isn’t just a female mirror image of a bad boy. The male evolutionary equivalent to women wanting the bad boys would be to want a threesome and/or harem. On that animal brain level, women want to be in the alpha’s harem and men want to be the alpha with the harem.
So women’s attraction for bad boys, as many problems as it causes, makes sense on a certain level. Guys who give off that sort of tribal chief vibe don’t actually have to be bad at all, but in our overly feminized society where men are taught that masculinity is bad, it probably leads to a negative correlation between that sort of masculine confidence and morality. Along the same lines, threesome porn, harem fantasies, or even just greater promiscuity makes sense for men.
So where does the yandere fantasy fit into this? It seems like it’s a combination of a male and female fantasy. What is the benefit of a violently dominant obsessive woman? I don't know. Maybe it arises not just from depictions in the media of strong women, but on a deeper level in how men are feminized and desire dominance as a result. Just my idle speculation.
Though really, why do any number of fetishes exist? People are turned on by all sorts of unusual things. I’m not judging these fetishes, but many of them seem so random.
