The most jaw-dropping part of this isn't how late it's come, or the hypocrisy of it coming so long after other folks did the same and all the actual science pointing out the uselessness of cloth masking came out, or even the eyebrow-raising nature of it coming just as state courts are getting to addressing the whole mess...The most jaw-dropping part of this is that, per the rumors, like in a few other states (*cough* California *cough*) there would still be a mandate for schools.
Because we haven't screwed up children enough. We should keep doing it while everyone else returns to (more) normal!
IL is dropping the mandate everywhere but schools, for example. Though that's because of some sort of lawsuit preventing them from ending it there, apparently.
Pretty much, polling is turning wildly against them and they're trying to avoid getting caught in the backlash.

Yeah, in Germany, only four states still have the 2G rule for all business, mine unfortunately included. Luckily, I live right next to the state-border to Wiesbaden, Hessen. Getting myself anything from books to clothes is now only a busdrive away, while the businesses in Maine are left to seethe and the politcans are scratching their heads like confused chimps over why everyone hates them.

Pritzker, Hochul, Newsom are dismantling mask mandates because it's election time!
Murphy (NJ), Carney (DE), Cooper (NC), JBE (LA) don't have to face the voters ever again respectively.
Newsome earned very perminate enemies during the lockdown, and the state is so far in the red that reform is functionally impossible. The state is going to go off a cliff full speed.
