They already were valid targets. I know this is asking an awful lot of a copenick, but you can actually read the Geneva convention online. It's in plain English. You really think the wee kiddies are trundling along to school in the middle of a full scale war? Ukraine closed their schools on February 21st. This is precisely why the Geneva convention provides conventions for the marking of medical buildings, POW camps, etc. A field hospital might be set up in a parking garage or a POW camp in a fenced lot. Of course, if the Ukrainians did that they'd be promptly bombed by the Russians, who did it in Syria and have been doing in Ukraine:
