Russian Invasion of Ukraine 2022

Thread Pruned for Derailed Discussion
I love the Whatsboutism that's constantly derailing the thread so we can talk about the Bay of Pigs and Mexican War and other stupid nonsensical non-sequiters and red herrings that are shitting up this thread which is assumedly about the Russian Invasion of the Ukraine.

#RememberTheMaine

I just went through twenty four pages of this thread and six pages (one quarter of it) was derailed discussion. You all know who you are... (probably because I made sure you got a notification for EVERY post).

Discussions tend to drift... but try and exercise some self control. I'll try and go through this thread every so often but I created a Garbage Thread for the derailments. I was originally going to go through the thread and make individual topics... but there were like six different derails going on and so I decided Garbage Day gets one megathread.

This thread is meant to discuss the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine so try and keep focused on that subject. Thank you.

If things keep getting out of hand, I'll start randomly hitting people like the Shelling in the Donbass.

Here's your new thread. It too gets a special Title named after a special someone.

Ok, back on topic, since the mods are snipping.

Any actual confirmation the Ukranians actually retook the Hostomel Airport or is it all just propaganda war. The story keeps changing.

Utterly irrelevant, you did actually lose some battles, and the Taliban are still holding the country and laughing.

A little humility, self-reflection, and with less jingoism please. At the end of the day, we tax payers decide if you even have a job, and if you can't win wars, why should we continue to pay your salaries as oppose to firing you and finding someone who can win a war?
Because our politcial class decided to let the military NOT do what they are good at, it fucked us over.
Ask the Taliban why they ran in 01 after we damn near wiped them out. As Saddam what happend to his one of thebest militaries.
The US has not lost militarily in its lifetime. It has lost politically.

Also,

I rather think that this time they really did it and the rest of the unit fled to the forest waiting for the relief.
So whats everyones bets on how long the Ukrainian military can hold out? I'm thinking by Sunday just just run out of supplies
I seriously doubt that the war will end, simply the front will hold for a while, simply the pace of fighting today is so high that what used to take weeks is now lost in a few days. There will be a break for some time, they will gather strength and start to fight each other again.

2-3 days, by then the Russians will probably reach and begin shelling Kiev at which point Ukraine will surrender since having your capital shelled by artillery while the ground forces get ready to move in is a pretty good sign to politicians it is time to leavr

Putin has held back his best troops, the formations sent in were 2nd rate troops at best, judging from the number of POWs and dead.

The Kiev air assault failing was the most probable result. German airborne assaults and OP Market Garden suffered similar results.

Russia is strangely silent when they normally would be crowing in delight.

No T-90s were spotted. No T-14 Armatas either. No sign of Spetsnaz nor of Russian Naval Infantry.

Something is going on.

I think Putin is going to do something big tonight.

Specifically, the U.S. has won battles time and time again but has it won those wars? What were you guys really fighting them for like that over there? If you were to introduce Liberal Democracy you would get screwed over big time. When the Soviets put in their regime, at least they didn't have to turn half the country into rubble to do it. And they were able to hold on for a while realistically!
The US was manipulated into a war it could not win.

You cannot kill an idea, because that is what jihadism is.

Yeah sure, rather Ukraine will maneuver them into this position and then attack them from the flank, it's not the first time Kiev was under siege and Ukrainian authorities are not going to give the Russkies victory so easily.
And shelling the city, well I guess they have post-Soviet bunkers under the city to hide in?

Apparently Kiev is getting bombed now according to the rumor mill but live footage is unclear I can hear explosions and one camera cut off but who knows now.

Kiev is no longer the objective. Or maybe it never was.

Search up "US biolabs in Ukraine"

I think that is what triggered this invasion.

It's really hard to say. Think of comparable operations where a 1st World Power clobbered a smaller one.

1991 Persian Gulf War was over after six weeks of airstrikes and a hundred hours of ground combat.
2001 Invasion of Afghanistan started with airstrikes on October 7th 2001, by October 18th Green Berets and Special Forces entered Afghanistan. By November 12th Kabul had fallen. By December 7th Kandahar had fallen and the "conventional" war was over in most of the country.
2003 Iraq Invasion started on March 20th 2003. By April 15th everything had fallen including Baghdad on April 10th and Tikrit, Saddam's base of power and hometown on the 15th.
2008 Russo-Georgian War went from August 1st to 12th when the Cease Fire was brokered. But the Russians didn't start an offensive until August 7th so basically five days.

Ukraine is larger in size and population then all of those countries, but less militarized then 1991 Iraq. And not as Islamist and Youthful/Fecund as Iraq or Afghanistan either.

Biden already did what he said he was gonna do. He slapped on some more sanctions, then went back to his nap.

I'm not sure what you want the geriatric old man to do? Send our men to die in yet another foreign conflict? If you're going to send our men to die in an intervention for moralist reasons, then there are better places to send them, like stopping genocide in Yemen or fighting China. Besides, Europeans should handle their own conflicts.

Being annexed by Russia doesn't seem like it's very bad.

Official Ukrainian reports of landings in/near Odesa (via Turkish news agency, but verifiable)

:(

I think the real question now is how long before Ukrainian soldiers start throwing off their uniforms and blending in with the civilian population for an insurgency.

Yikes, I'd imagine that would lead to punitive measures against the populace.

Domestically Russia has a few problems, namely an aging populace.

Why is the populace aging? Is it like Japan where the cost of living is so prohibitively high that people can't afford to have large families?

Oh missed this earlier.

Oh, really.Where is the video so that people can see it themselves?

Stinks like fake news.
You... You really going to go there again?
 I have little doubt that when you get proven wrong again that you will continue on as you are now.

The story was literally plastered all over Social Media that Putin had pre-recorded his Declaration of War three or so days prior simply based on the clothes he was wearing. Then the metadata story came out.

long story short communist countries have a steeper decline in fertility, basically in the 70s many people just stopped having kids, that is also why people proposed using attrition, due to the communist years Russia no longer has the manpower they did during the Second World War.

welp the US has spoken apparently

Apparently almost 1800 people detained in these Anti-War Protests.

And here's one in St. Petersburg.

Some random Helicopter War Porn from eleven hours ago...

Reportedly Thirteen Ukrainian Soldiers/Border troops? stationed on Snake Island, in the Black Sea, refused to surrender.

Snake Island houses a lighthouse, some residences and a small marine research facility and is located about twenty miles off of the Romanian Coast. Or was anyways... The President has stated they'll all get the Hero of Ukraine Medal posthumously.
