I'm pretty damn sure that if he gets charged with something, it won't be for going to first random money exchange and buying some rubles like any ordinary person would (which seems to be the random ass guess based strawman you are clobbering so hard).
But what we know little of, the man had business dealings with Russian state owned entities in the past, and we have no idea how this interview was set up legally, but more likely than not there was some sort of contract, and that might be something going against the sanctions.
And if he doesn't get charged, in that case it's just yet another case of journos making a bullshit story.
I don't even think he should be charged because the spirit of the law is aimed at curbing companies and corporations, not individuals.
That said, if his company got lots of money from Russia (or the other way around) then that would be something to smack him hard for. Because Russia is literally just straight up an enemy of the USA, no different than HAMAS.
