Had this debate with someone.
As an American you have certain rights that the American government can’t stop you from doing. If you go to other nations that don’t recognize those rights oh well. But the AMERICAN government is supposed to recognize it and not restrict it.
For example you have the first amendment right to free speech and religion. The American government can’t punish you for your beliefs, but if you go to Saudi Arabia and insult Islam they can. Do you understand how rights work? They are given by the government an assurance to do or not do something. When there is an American right that means the US government is responsible for it.
