It does not look like Russia has the strength of arms to deny the Donbass to Ukraine. And I have the impression that the Russian people are less invested in that area than in Crimea (so less opposition to, say, mass conscription in Crimea's defense).
Yeah, a return to status quo ante bellum, or close enough seems the most likely option to me at this point. Which would be a huge loss of face for Russia internationally, and putin personally at the higher levels, but probably something Russia can spin as at least partial success for domestic consumption. If they hold onto the land route to Crimea, that's even better for them. It'd also likely lead to plenty of violent unrest and rebellion in the newer occupied areas, both natural and encouraged, at least until Russia just murders or relocates everyone. They'd also continue to sit on the shitty end of sanctions, and possibly face even more escalatory ones. I think that's only going to be avoided if they return Crimea. The break away republics, if they were to conduct monitored elections and achieve a clear mandate for succession, might be something the international community would let slide. Ukraine maybe not so much, but how much they can do about it might be limited, especially by whatever form future security guarantees might take.
I will not be surprised if Ukraine and Russia accept an on paper status quo ante bellum, however I would expect it to be one that follows the model of the Vietnam War's Paris Peace Accords: short lived and everybody knows it, followed by a crushing defeat for the side that lost its backer. For the Donbass, anyway; I expect Russia to retain control of Crimea, and possibly negotiate water rights (that were being denied pre-war). Getting Ukraine to give up on Crimea and also give up on strangling Crimea would be a genuine win for Russia, albeit a very Pyrrhic victory at this cost.

Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky was never confirmed officially and no funeral was given and he was in fact seen with Kadyrov 3 days after his reported death. Major General Vladimir Frolov is the only confirmed death with a videotaped funeral with full military honors and an open casket viewing.

Russia fires 80,000 artillery rounds a day alone. Not counting mortar rounds, tank rounds, or automatic grenade rounds, that is a lot of metal.
