Not really, the 1st Guard Tank Army was used at Kharkov and they were the Russian elite.
It seemed that on day 1 they used mostly lower quality units, but now they're going in hard.

Makes sense, the low quality units absorbed the initial fires and drew out Ukrainian Units into the open and still kicked the door open for the next wave.

So far, it looks like the main effort is actually at Kharkiv and all other fronts are distractions. If they succeed, good, if not, the Ukrainians are forced to defend them and weaken Kharkiv front which they have to keep if they want to remain an independent country with an independent economic policy.

Then again, all of these could be double feints and the real blow/s will come elsewhere.

So, am I getting this right that it seems that a) the Russians have only used a small part of their assembled forces so far and b) those forces seem to be 2nd class units lacking the high tech equipment that the Russians actually field in useful numbers? Because - and I can easily see that's because they are shit - our news media doesn't seem to have caught on to that.

It's a mix. Rob Lee had shared speculation that it was 30-60,000 on the first days and ramped up to 80,000 IIRC (I'd have to check back) after that and steadily increasing.

And it's a mix with SSO and Spetsnaz units seen in theater but backed up by secondary heavy/line units (like the references to Eastern Military District Units) but recently they've seen more 1st class units.
