I'm almost afraid to ask but who exactly are you referring to with "maniacs developing machine intelligence" and why would they want to cause armageddon instead of just ruling the country from the shadows in comfort instead?

Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, basically any transhumanist or high level technological developer. As for why, so that they can assume control over all world resources to push forward their transhumanist agenda.

They can still use her, it'd be a better and more familiar than full attempts to use tech that's probably gonna have problems with weak wifi signals
Those brain chips and nanites and AI are probably gonna cost a LOT of money to develop or even remotely operate
The AI even more-so, so much excess heat
Plus, why bother with Transhumanism? It's too unfamiliar or too OCP and probably expensive more than anything else. Hell it's probably lot of work just to keep track and control one person.
The main problem I have with crazy conspiracies, are less that they're crazy and more that they'd be really expensive and/or surprisingly sloppy and faulty in practice
Plus, guys like Isaac Arthur have more-or-less explained the impracticalities of things like the Zoo Hypothesis or everything's in the Matrix
A few decades from now that attempt at a successful conspiracy for taking over the world would be plausible to bear fruit, right now it'd be like trying to take control of the world via subtle indoctrination in a place wherein the majority populace is too lazy to bother listening or making it part of themselves, they'd only succeed with a relatively few numbers, whom even then won't be the perfect agents and will mess shit up
I took a break from here for a few months so I missed that part.
Isn't Musk on the record arguing against making ai? And secondly I'm pretty sure causing armageddon would be a net negative on how many resources any such cabal could bring to bear by virtue of the whole "we nuked everything so now we have to rebuild it to actually get at the resources oops" vs just taking over the US. Besides which, any such agenda would be better served simply developing the tech and just selling it while having the government subsidize you the whole way since you're apparently powerful enough to just remove a president and vp outright and so clearly have influence and power to spare.
Either that or Biden dies within the first year of office and just to be clear I don't mean he gets accidented or anything like that. I mean he legitimately dies of natural causes, well arguably elder abuse because he is clearly in no state to be anywhere near a high stress situation.
Why does any terrorist do anything? Ideology, my friend, ideology.
I mean these ARE the richest men in the world short of Bezos: price is no object to them.

Who said anything about nukes? Nukes are messy and deny resources: more likely they'd use plagues and political instability.

Even money has limits when it comes to the lack of super-scientists to pay for things to solve all their problems
And I don't think even Bezos has encountered a Money Sink that may require millions to billions daily before it even remotely bears fruit
Plus, even Big Businesses can be surprisingly frustratingly incompetent and out-of-touch
That's the weakness of whatever modern conspiracy the corporations & governments have working together.....sheer lack of perfect agents who won't impulsively break things
Doesn't stop them from continuing said conspiracy in broad daylight, helps more if people's short attention spans and selective memory are a factor
It would be like Metal Gear, except trying it all with a VERY poor AI that doesn't even have the ability to process all of the information without lagging every 5 minutes and needs instead a large number of overworked moderators doing it all for free and it would be easy to notice, but to begin with most people either shut up or leave or get kicked out for pointing it out and since people have short term and selective memory they never know what the other guy actually ever said or bother to find out

Obviously contempt for the human form and veneration of the artificial. Their agenda is scattered literally across the entirety of media: they aren't subtle with the messages they wish to indoctrinate people with: Musk in particular has convinced most of the internet of the inherent goodness of technology, while others attempt to convince the masses of the fragility and flawedness of the human form.
That;s because most businesses aren't actually in the business (pun intended) of making profit: they're tools to accomplish agendas. This is true even outside the transhumanists businesses: disney in particular is a disgusting hot-bed of centrism and liberalism.

I think you have this relationship mixed up: obviously china is kow-towing (pun intended) to the transhumanists, making up one of their biggest supporters. After all, where was COVID, the transhumanists greatest tool in causing damage to the system, first spotted? Why, china!
Chinese Leaders didn't develop COVID, of course, they just allowed the transhumanists to use their nation as a test bed out of a sick desire to reap the benefits of transhumanism.
